Position Information

Join the Honolulu Board of Water Supply as a Chemist I!

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS), Water Quality Division, is looking to hire two (2) Chemistsfor their Chemical Laboratory located in Honolulu.

As a Chemist I, you'll help ensure water safety by testing natural and treated water for chemicals like pesticides, metals, and minerals. You'll follow strict lab procedures and work with potentially hazardous substances, so attention to detail and safety is key.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Test water samples for chemicals and minerals to ensure water quality and safety.
  • Use a variety of lab techniques and instruments (e.g., color tests, titrations, and wet chemical methods).
  • Collect water samples from different field locations, including hard-to-reach areas with uneven terrain.
  • Investigate water quality complaints by talking with customers, testing samples, and writing reports.
  • Document and report lab findings clearly, both in writing and verbally.
  • Maintain lab equipment and supplies, prepare chemical solutions, and keep the lab organized.
  • Stay up to date with new methods and developments in water testing and chemistry.
  • Perform other assignments related to this role.

Work Environment:

  • You'll work mainly in a lab under supervision, but will also travel to different parts of the island to collect samples in the field.

Special Work Requirements:

  • Ability to tolerate exposure to chemicals, noxious fumes, hazardous and toxic substances while using appropriate safety gear.
  • Physically able to climb, walk, and/or crawl in confined conditions and/or remote areas while carrying fifty pounds of equipment/samples.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work inchemistry.

Substitution:

Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree in chemistry on a year-for-year basis. Such work experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree in chemistry.

Education must have been completed by the time of application in order to be credited. Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, proper documentation, e.g., a foreign credential evaluation (FCE), must be provided.
