GTI Energy, the nation’s leading research and development and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for a Sr. Scientist in the Environmental and Chemical Research Services Lab.
The position will serve as a Principal Investigator on research projects and provide analytical support in the Environmental and Chemical Research Services gas chromatography group for contract laboratory services and on-going GTI research programs.

Work LocationThe position will be based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. It is a lab-based position that will be required to be on site Monday through Friday. A hybrid schedule enabling work from home opportunities will be dependent on job responsibilities.
Primary Responsibilities- Serve as a Principal Investigator to conceptualize in part or in whole the writing of project proposals, the development of research plans, the processing of project data, and the writing of project reports.
- Provide additional lab support on research projects and other activities as needed.
- Provide analytical support for both external clients and for internal research projects.
- Sample matrices include natural gas, biogas, and synthetic fuel gases.
- Utilize Gas Chromatography (GC) following ASTM, GPA, and ISO methodology for analyses such as:
- Major compositional analysis
- Major and minor organic sulfur analysis
- Trace constituents such as ammonia, siloxanes, volatile organic compounds
- Other analytical techniques as assigned and trained.
- Data evaluation and reporting
- Attend safety training, safety meetings and apply safety standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ability to plan experiments and analyze / present data clearly.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a cross-functional format.
- Ability to effectively communicate (written/verbal) with internal and external personnel.
- Hands-on knowledge/experience in gas chromatography is required.
- Knowledge of chromatography software such as Scion Compass and Agilent Chemstation is desirable but not required.
- Motivated to learn new gas chromatography techniques.
- Excellent attention to detail, ability to both follow and give directions, and work well independently or in a group.
- Adaptive and flexible to succeed in a changing environment
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (or related science degree) required ; 7-10+ years relevant professional level work experience
- 5+ years of relevant, professional level work experience after an M.S
- 2+ years of relevant, professional level work experience after a Ph.D.
The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $105,000 USD annually. This salary range is GTI Energy’s good faith estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, GTI Energy’s business or organizational needs and an individual’s relevant experience, education, qualifications, certifications, skills, seniority, geographic location, and/or performance. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus. The range listed is just one component of GTI Energy’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, paid time off, and region-specific benefits.
