Talen Energy has a job opening for a Senior Chemical Engineer. The position will be located at the Brandon Shores Power Plant in Baltimore, MD (Pasadena area). Brandon Shores is a coal fired generating station. We are looking for candidates with a bachelors degree in chemical engineering or equivalent with experience; more than 5 years experience in a related technical discipline; technical expertise to support critical activities for the generation or utilization of electrical energy.

The expected salary range for this position is $100,000.00 to $149,500.00. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors as permitted by law. Successful candidates will also participate in Talen Energys Short-Term Incentive program.

Job Summary
Responsible for different aspects of running a coal fired power plant with a FGD and a biological wastewater system. This is a key contributor in a complex environment who may lead functional teams or projects. With little guidance, uses extensive technical knowledge of an engineering and environmental discipline to proactively solve complex problems with significant impact on facilities used in the generation, and utilization of electrical energy. The position is responsible for providing sound engineering judgment in guidance to complex evolutions for systems and equipment. The position requires an individual who is a recognized expert for knowledge critical to the organization and limited in the industry. Namely Biological FGD WWTP that removes nitrogen from the waste steam and steam boiler chemistry and association equipment such as polishing filters and demineralizers. The position will also give guidance to boiler water chemistry as well as other water issues. The position contributes to the development of the departmental strategy. The position will help coordinate day-to-day operational activities for the facility. The position will provide guidance to employees and/or contractors on cost effective compliance activities.

Primary Responsibilities
1. Gives daily guidance on the operation and maintenance of the biological FGD WWTP and scrubber systems.
2. Gives guidance on boiler and other equipment water chemistry needs.
3. Evaluates and decides on long term technical and environmental strategies and effectively implements these strategies.
4. Oversees ordering of needed VOM chemicals.
5. Help manage the plant air and water permits to assure compliance in operations and assists in reporting.
6. Responsible for providing technical guidance to other engineers and craft personnel. Establish goals and objectives in their technical area of expertise across the plant or department and executes those objectives successfully.
7. Assesses the financial implication of decisions and manages resource requirements and business needs for projects and technical solutions.
8. Solves complex problems; takes a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions and makes use of knowledge in area of expertise to include both technical engineering and environmental compliance activities.
9. Interprets internal/external technical issues and recommends best practices in own discipline.
10. Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements through an extensive knowledge of those requirements and appropriate planning and execution to achieve desired results.
11. May lead functional teams or projects to achieve milestones and objectives and will occasionally present topical matters to senior leadership of the plant, Business Line or Department.
12. Trains and develops subordinate staff.
13. Works independently with guidance on only the most complex tasks.

Basic Qualifications
1. Bachelors degree in chemical engineering or equivalent with experience. Discipline required will vary by the specific job requirements.
2. More than 5 years experience in related technical discipline.
3. Thorough understanding of technical area of expertise in support of critical activities for the generation, transmission, distribution or utilization of electrical energy.
4. Is fully capable to work with and lead/manage a team of licensed WWTP operations employees.

Preferred Qualifications
1. At least 10 years of related experience preferred with biological waste water treatment plant systems.
2. Experience in and active participation with industry organization within field of expertise.
3. Power plant O&M experience.
