The Position
Forensic Specialists perform a combination of security and client care duties in a secure mental health facility for treatment/evaluation of the mentally and/or medically ill offender and/or offenders whose competency requires evaluation.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.
The position supports Forensic Services for Lakes Crossing within the Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH) in Reno. The facility provides inpatient competency restoration, for persons with alleged criminal charges. All persons committed and ordered by the courts are to remain in Forensic custody in a secure facility. Forensic Facilities operate on a 24-hour basis and have a combination of shifts to provide care for our clients and the safety of the public. A Forensic Specialist serves as a Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Certified Category 3 Peace Officer and a Certified Mental Health Professional. As a Forensic Specialist you will perform law enforcement duties, that include transportation, community outings, community housing inspections, legal processes, and investigations. Forensic Specialists will also perform health care duties that include but are not limited to therapeutic treatment, groups, client sponsorships, ambulation, and basic activities of daily living. The incumbents will work in a trainee capacity for the first 12 months, successfully completing the Peace Officer Academy with a Category 3 certification, and begin the Mental Health Certification Courses.
