The Chemistries and Supplies Division is currently seeking an R&D Scientist to join an innovative team at our Global Headquarters in Santa Clara, California. As a member of the Biological Chemistries Research Team, you will work to develop new chromatography columns, sample prep kits, standards and workflows for our customers in biopharma labs. You will work in teams alongside other analytical chemists as well as synthetic chemists, biochemists, physicists, and engineers. Our team also engages in external collaborations and works closely with our colleagues in marketing and manufacturing roles to bring new products to market.

The responsibilities for this role will include:

  • Plans and conducts experiments to develop new products for the analysis of biomolecules or to support existing products.
  • Properly documents experimental work to allow the efficient recovery of experimental data. Prepares and delivers presentations, technical reports, summaries, procedures, and protocols.
  • Proven track record of designing and troubleshooting experiments.
  • Helps to build new capabilities for the R&D lab by planning the acquisition and installation of new equipment or finding training opportunities.
  • Researches technical aspects of competitor products and academic literature to build the knowledge necessary for the successful commercialization of products.
  • Supports transition of product design to production and delivery by working in cross-functional teams (with colleagues in marketing, manufacturing, and other business process roles).
  • Engages with other business units (e.g. the mass spectrometry & liquid chromatography instrument businesses) within the company to align research and commercialization activities.
  • May make contributions to scientific literature and conferences such as publication of papers, presentations, patents, and application notes.
  • Maintains awareness of developments in the field of analytical biomolecule separation and mass spectrometry and acts as an internal consultant on technical aspects of product function and application.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmaceutical sciences, or chemical biology. Candidates with equivalent experience to a PhD will also be considered.
  • Experience in LC/MS analysis of biomolecules, including one and ideally more than one of: proteins, peptides, oligonucleotides, glycans, and lipids.
  • Experience in at least one (preferably more) of the following areas:
    • Optimizing and troubleshooting chromatographic separations
    • Maintaining or installing LC/MS instruments or training others to use them
    • Oligonucleotide mapping
    • Use of FPLC / AKTA to purify biomolecules
    • Design, validation, or troubleshooting of biological sample prep workflows
    • Use of robotic sample prep systems
    • Synthesis or expression of biomolecules
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills to both understand and solve complex, interrelated issues between assay chemistry, reagents, consumables, hardware, and software. Skilled at independently designing experiments and performing data analysis, identifying problems, and providing plans and solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work both within a team and autonomously.

This job has a full time weekly schedule. Our pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
