Ready to put your scientific expertise to work in detecting biological threat agents, both natural and man-made domestically and across the globe? We are seeking a Deputy Chief Scientist to support and facilitate biological research for the rapid detection of infectious diseases of global importance and the enhancement of global disease surveillance for early pathogen detection and response. This position resides at Fort Detrick in Fredrick, MD and will support the Biological Defense Research Directorate (BDRD) in the Molecular Diagnostics (MD) Department.
What You'll Be Doing:
Supports research and development, reagent production and quality management of molecular diagnostics, including, but not limited to production of real-time polymerase chain reaction assays, molecular assay development and platform test and evaluation, provide and evaluate proficiency testing for biological threats, laboratory and field support for biological threat agent detection.
What Required Skills You'll Bring:
5 years (Ph.D.) or 10 years (M.S.) experience in the biological sciences
Must possess practical knowledge of basic and applied research, including experimental design and methods
Must have demonstrated the ability to perform original and competent research
Must have the ability to support senior staff in creation and management of budgets, seeking funding sources and opportunities within the DoD, writing white papers and proposals, report writing, training scientific, technical and support staff, and independently carrying out research projects and supervising technicians
At least 10 years of deep experience in molecular biology in the field of biodefense with a focus on assay development, platform evaluation, platform development, identification of novel and cutting-edge technologies, and bioinformatics
Must have experience in quality management under ISO 17034/170254 Quality Management System
Must have hands-on experience working with BSAT in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories
Must currently possess or be obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
Must meet all criteria for enrollment in the BPRP.
