Job Description
The Department of Environmental Quality is looking to fill an Environmental Scientist I-III position in the Division of Environmental Response and Remediation. This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on experience and the job level offered within the series.
Job Description
Interpret scientific data and review technical documents for accuracy and completeness
Perform technical writing, including the preparation of sampling plans and analytical reports
Communicate technical, legal, and administrative issues to the public and regulated community through both written and in-person communication
Manage a variety of projects, and perform field oversight and environmental sampling.
Best Qualified Candidate
The best qualified candidate for this position will have the following:
Education and/or experience in project management.
Education and/or experience with respect to the following programs: EPA Superfund (CERCLA), Site Assessment, Emergency Removal, Community Right to Know (EPCRA), and other types of environmental investigations.
Education and/or experience in other types of environmental investigation or cleanup activities which have regulatory oversight.
Knowledge and/or experience with planning and performing environmental sampling.
Knowledge and/or experience of budget preparation and management.
Education and/or experience creating and tracking meaningful performance measures, including project strategic goals, milestones, and completions, as well as project schedules and budgets.
Sound computer skills such as Microsoft Word and Excel and Google Docs.
Familiarity with ArcGIS, ArcPRO, or other GIS Mapping software.
The ability to manage multiple projects/tasks.
The ability to use logic to analyze and critically evaluate data to draw conclusions.
The ability to work independently and/or in a team environment.
Strong technical writing skills via education and/or experience.
Preferences
Preference may be given to those with a Bachelor's degree in Physical or Life Sciences (including environmental science, biology, chemistry, geology, hydrogeology, or physics) or in Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering from an accredited university or college.
Preference may also be given to those who have completed or have the ability to complete OSHA HAZWOPER Certification 29 CFR 1910.120(a); Professional Geologist or Professional Engineer license; Regulatory education and/or experience with remedial projects or site assessments and investigations and education and/or experience in Superfund, Federal Facilities, Phase I and II Environmental Assessments, field oversight, and quality assurance.
Job Series
The selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Scientist I with a salary range of $25.27 - $37.95, an Environmental Scientist II with a salary range of $29.73 - $44.66 per hour, or an Environmental Scientist III with a salary range of $34.98 - $52.56 per hour.
Work Schedule:
This position offers a flexible work schedule.
Supplemental Information
Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
