The primary purpose of the Research Scientist position is to apply technical expertise and experience to plan, coordinate and supervise research projects. The Research Scientist is expected to independently organize animal studies, including but not limited to: drug and/or cell injections, and anatomical measurements. Additionally, they will be asked to provide technical assistance in either 1) animal genotyping, breeding, and colony management, 2) tissue processing and immunohistochemistry, or 3) molecular biology, cell culture, and immunoblot analysis. Duties will also include assistance with organizing reagents and samples, and assistance with general laboratory duties including ordering lab reagents, consumables and receiving shipments. The position requires independent decision-making, judgment and high organizational skills. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining safety standards in the laboratory as well as for training other personnel in animal techniques. The position requires independent decision making, judgment and excellent organizational skills, and most of all, a desire and willingness to continue to learn new skills and techniques for this preferably long-term position.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPENTENCIES
Research Design and Implementation Plans, organizes, coordinates, directs and participates in scientific research projects. Independently performing animal experiments in consultation with PI (breeding, weening, genotyping, bleeding, tissue harvesting, injections, downstream processing and analysis). Performs animal maintenance (safety protocols and standards, record keeping of animal inventory). Train new members of the laboratory in animal techniques.
Reviews Research Results Assigns and reviews work of subordinates, determines specific goals or objectives to be attained, evaluates resulting research data and revises techniques or approaches to work problems. Ensures the appropriate capture and maintenance of scientific records.
Maintains Equipment Supervises the design, development or adapting of equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results. Plans and supervises the training of technicians and other laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, the use of laboratory equipment and safety procedures.
Writes Reports and Order Supplies Compiles, writes and submits reports to superior. Ordering reagents and supplies.
Data Analysis Analyzes and evaluates research data and revises techniques and approaches to work problems. Works with the Principal Investigator on projects in the area of exosomes biology, drug development, and tumor biology. Participates in adopting new techniques and learning new skills to enhance research efforts.

Education
Required: Masters degree in one of the natural sciences or related field. PhD or Medical degree.
Experience
Required: Four years of experience in experimental or scientific work. With PhD, no experience required. With Medical degree, two years of experience in experimental or scientific work.
Preferred: Prior experience in cell culture, molecular biology techniques, and animal handling is required. Experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) and hands-on work in both in vivo and in vitro studies is a plus.
This position may be responsible for maintaining the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, as defined in Section 113.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code and therefore may require routine reviews and screening. The ability to satisfy and maintain all requirements necessary to ensure the continued security and integrity of such infrastructure is a condition of hire and continued employment.
