The City of Phoenix Water Services Department, one of the nation's largest potable water utilities, treats and delivers safe, reliable drinking water to 1.5 million customers across approximately 540 square miles. Phoenix Water Services also manages the sewer collection system and treats wastewater for 2.5 million residents in metropolitan Phoenix.

The Water Services Department (WSD) is seeking a Tuesday-Saturday Laboratory Technician to join the Laboratory Services Section of the Environmental & Safety Division. In this role you are responsible for monitoring water quality for inorganic and organic constituents in order to optimize plant processes and maintain regulatory compliance requirements. You will be engaged in the physical, chemical, microbiological, or process-related analyses of water/wastewater samples in accordance with quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) policies and procedures. This position operates in a laboratory that is open 365 days a year.

SALARY

Pay Range: $21.02 - $34.25 per hour.

Hiring Range: $21.02 - $25.56 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of standard laboratory tests or instrumental analyses in a public health, crime laboratory, or utility chemical laboratory, including courses in chemistry, bacteriology, or a related field.
  • Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Working conditions:

  • The Wet Chemistry Section position assists in seven-day coverage and will be required to work Saturdays and rotating holidays.
  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, microbiology, environmental sciences, or closely related field.
  • Experience with/in the following:
  • Wet Chemistry analyses, including BOD/CBOD, COD/SCOD, Total Solids, Volatile Solids, Total Suspended Solids, Total Dissolved Solids, Alkalinity, Ammonia, Sulfides, Titrations, TOC, and Specific Gravity.
  • Ordering standards, reagents, and laboratory supplies, and maintaining chemical and consumables inventories using inventory software.
  • Environmental Protection Agency and/or Arizona Department of Health Services policies and procedures for laboratory analysis.
  • Laboratory data entry procedures and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Basic maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment as needed.
  • Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) policies and procedures.
  • Laboratory support equipment, ex: Pipettes, glassware, etc.
  • Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.).
