Job Summary

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will support advanced research projects in Marine Science at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), focusing on the analysis of underwater LiDAR data. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in processing and interpreting LiDAR datasets using Python, particularly for the purpose of underwater object detection. This position is a full-time, six-month appointment and offers the opportunity to contribute to high-impact marine research in collaboration with faculty and interdisciplinary teams.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct advanced analysis of underwater LiDAR data to support object detection and classification initiatives using Python and related libraries.

Collaborate with marine technology and data science teams to integrate datasets into centralized repositories for research and visualization.

Develop and implement data processing pipelines and algorithms for analyzing LiDAR point clouds and enhancing underwater feature detection.

Assist in the preparation of technical reports, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations of research findings.

Participate in regular team meetings and contribute to the overall research strategy and dissemination plan.

Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising faculty.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. from an accredited college or university in Marine Science or closely related field and two (2) years of experience in analyzing LiDAR data, with a focus on underwater applications. Proficient in Python programming, particularly in libraries and tools such as NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, and point cloud processing frameworks (e.g., Open3D, PDAL, or similar).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to deliver clear, concise, and accurate communication (verbal and written) in a timely manner, adapting to diverse audiences and providing constructive feedback.

Skilled in data entry, extraction, and analysis using various software applications.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant computer software.

Ability to write clear and concise reports and correspondence.

Handles sensitive information with discretion, maintains confidentiality,

Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with marine science fieldwork or underwater sensing technologies.

Background in grant writing or contributing to funded research proposals.

Familiarity with machine learning techniques applied to geospatial or sensor data.
