Responsibilities

Health Research, Inc. is seeking an Hourly Research Scientist to work within the Division of Translational Medicine at the Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health. The primary responsibility of the Hourly Research Scientist will be to assist with and provide support to staff implementing a novel purification method to isolate ribosomes from small volumes of cell culture. This method, called RAPPL (RNA Affinity Purification using Poly-Lysine), has been developed as a simple, cost-effective, and rapid method to purify active ribosomes and other RNA-containing complexes from small cell culture volumes. The incumbent will optimize this method for purifying ribosomes from Escherichia coli (Eco ) cell cultures, assist to assess its efficacy of purification as compared to previous methods such as sucrose fractionation, and then apply it to purify ribosomes from other bacterial cell cultures, such as Mycobacterium smegmatis (Msm) . The work may involve activities including but not limited to bacterial cell culture, buffer preparation, ultra-centrifugation, cryo-electron electron microscopy grid preparation, RNA gels, protein gels, and biochemical assays.

This position is part of the Pathways to Public Health Internship Program. It is made available through funding from the Center for Disease Control's Public Health Infrastructure Grant to expand opportunities to strengthen career pathways to public health by bringing together students of all disciplines and academic levels with public health professionals to create a space of exploration, learning, and development.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree in a Biological Sciences or Biochemistry or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

At least one year of experience performing protein purification, biochemical assays or similar procedures in a laboratory or clinical setting.

Conditions of Employment

Hourly, grant funded position expected until approximately 11/28/2025. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Travel, 10% of the time, will be required.

The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire. Telecommuting will not be available.
