Primary Purpose of the Organization:
Accredited by the American Chemical Society, the Department of Chemistry, Physics and Materials Science offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Chemistry, with six concentrations in General Chemistry, Materials Science, Biochemistry, Pre-Health, Pre-Pharmacy, and Chemical Entrepreneurship, as well as academic minors in Physics, Materials Science, and Materials Science Graduate Certificate. The Department provides students with a quality education and prepares students with the ability to provide quality research through various analytical methods and instrumentations. The Department is equipped with many state-of-the-art analytical instruments such as SEM, AFM, XRD, UV-Vis, Raman, Fluorescence, FTIR, FTIR Microscope, DSC, TGA, 400 MHz JEOL NMR, Nano LC-Orbitrap MS/MS, HPLC, GC/MS/MS, GC, EPMA, ICP-OES, etc., and operates FSU Planetarium, Observatory, Southeastern North Carolina Regional Microanalytical and Imaging Consortium (SENCR-MIC) and Interdisciplinary Materials Research and Education Laboratory (IMREL).
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The position's primary purpose is to conduct research, provide research training to undergraduate students, present research results at conferences, and write manuscripts to publish the research work in peer reviewed journals.
Duties:
60%: Synthesis and Characterization of Two Dimensional MXenes- Synthesize two dimensional MXenes using different synthetic methods and characterize using several state-of-the-art instruments including Raman Spectrometer, X-ray diffractometer, UV Vis, and emission spectrometers etc.
20%: Mentoring Undergraduate Students- Train undergraduate students in sample synthesis, processing, characterization, and property measurements.
10%: Maintenance of the Research Instruments- Keeping track of use of instruments, keep track of service contract of instruments and request of maintenance if necessary.
10%: Other- Collaborating with scientists at Savannah River National Laboratory for magnetic and gamma radiation measurements on MXenes and other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
The selected candidate will also have an opportunity to visit and perform experiments at Savannah River national laboratory during summer. This position is for one year with the possibility of renewal, based on satisfactory performance and availability of funds.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, Physical Chemistry, or a closely related field.
- The desired candidate should have experience in experimental condensed matter physics, especially in magnetism/spintronics and optical spectroscopy.
- Candidates who have experience in synthesis of two dimensional MXenes and handling SEM, AFM, XRD, Raman, PPMS/SQUID, transient absorption instruments are preferred. The undergraduate students mentoring experience is a plus.
