The purpose of this job is to plan, perform, and analyze results of laboratory tests on water and related substances to ensure environmental and public health standards are met.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description

  • Enters data, prepares reports, and maintains laboratory inventory.
  • Collects samples and performs chemical testing.
  • Maintains proper plant chemical composition.
  • Operates, maintains, calibrates and troubleshoots a variety of laboratory equipment.
  • Responds to questions and concerns from customers.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered

Education and Experience

  • Associate's Degree or 2 years of college in a science related field.
  • 1-3 years' experience in laboratory operations.

Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position

Knowledge of:

  • Common business software applications such as Microsoft Office.
  • Mathematical calculations used in laboratory testing.
  • Standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of chemistry and data sampling.
  • Hazards and safety precautions related to using chemicals and performing tests on potentially hazardous substances.

Skill in:

  • Typing and/or data entry with minimal errors.
  • Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.
  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Collecting, organizing, and analyzing complex and/or technical data.

Ability to:

  • Use and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Create and maintain accurate records.
  • Follow standard safety procedures for exposure to caustics and concentrated acids.
  • Provide high levels of effective customer service.
  • Compile, organize, interpret, and communicate data and results concisely.
  • Recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Work on-call rotation and respond within 30 minutes of all hours of the day/night.
  • Regularly use a computer, software, phone and related office equipment.
  • Focus on tasks.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Positions in the Utilities Department assigned to work on-call are required to maintain a telephone and permanent residence within 50 road miles of City Hall, 701 E. Broadway, Columbia, MO, within 90 days of hire.

  • Incumbents required to identify and distinguish colors, feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, walk, drive, reach with hands/arms, and stoop/kneel.

Hours/Days

Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm; on-call for some after hours and weekends
