Title: Bench Scientist
Location: Andover, MA
Duration: 15 months contract (Extendable)
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 1st shift
(average 2 off-hour lab sessions per week)
Overview
The Manufacturing Sciences and Technology (MSAT) Upstream Group supports late-stage development and commercial biopharmaceutical/vaccine production, focusing on process troubleshooting, improvements, and second-generation process development. This role contributes to fermentation process execution, analytics, equipment maintenance, and collaborative technical problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities
Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers on upstream fermentation projects
Setup bioreactors, execute experiments, perform basic analytics, and document results
Maintain laboratory area and equipment in clean, safe, and functional condition
Perform routine laboratory studies, following SOPs and Standard Work instructions
Serve as an upstream process resource for project teams
Comply with safety and regulatory requirements via internal training programs
Conduct user-level equipment maintenance and associated documentation
Troubleshoot technical issues with processes, equipment, and instrumentation
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's or Associate degree in Chemical Engineering, Bioprocessing, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biology, or related discipline
3-5 years relevant bioprocess experience
Proficient in aseptic technique
(REQUIRED)
Experience in bioreactor operation and related analytical tools
Strong upstream technical knowledge and hands-on skills
Ability to plan and execute experiments independently
Strong data analysis, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Proficient in scientific software and analytical tools
Preferred Qualifications
Industry experience in biopharmaceutical or pharmaceutical manufacturing
Troubleshooting skills for electrical and mechanical systems
Experience in microbial fermentation at lab and pilot/manufacturing scale
Familiarity with control and data acquisition systems
Knowledge of cell culture and fermentation scale-up, optimization, and operations
Interest in applying current scientific literature
Physical/Mental Requirements
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs routinely
Standing, walking, bending, and tool use for prolonged periods
Perform complex mathematical calculations and data analysis
