A Research Laboratory Technician III position is available for a collaborative research project in the laboratories of Dr. Jared Weis in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Dr. Victoria Weis in the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. This project integrates gastrointestinal cell biology/physiology and biomedical imaging tools to explore the mechanistic underpinnings of gastrointestinal disease and repair, with a predominant focus on the developing intestine in premature infants and children.

Education / Experience

Bachelors degree in the biological and/or physical sciences with two years of related clinical/research experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience. Masters degree in biology or related physical science preferred.

Daily Responsibilities and Experiments

  • Perform and assist with rodent animal experiments.
    • Responsible for maintaining animal models, blood and other tissue sample collection, injections, procedures, and assisting with research procedures as directed.
  • Maintain mammalian cell culture lines and perform/assist cell culture studies.
    • Responsible for supply and maintenance of cell lines and necessary reagents/equipment.
  • Perform general experiments using biochemical and/or molecular methods and analysis.
    • Prepare and maintain chemical solutions, reagents, buffers, etc.
    • Work with tissues and cells using histology and microscopy.
    • Responsible for operating laboratory instruments and collecting output data related to on-going experiments.
  • Must have strong knowledge and skills in cellular biology (such as mammalian cell line culture, proliferation, apoptosis assays), in addition to molecular biology (such as DNA and RNA extraction, PCR or RT-PCR, western blotting, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence)
  • Analyze and format data for discussions with PIs, presentations, and publications.
  • Must adhere to proper use of laboratory protocols and procedures to meet established guidelines and IACUC protocols.
  • Maintain and sanitize laboratory equipment (centrifuges, hoods, incubators, microscopes, etc.).
  • Maintain detailed written and electronic records of laboratory studies.

Periodic responsibilities

  • Train incoming personnel in basic techniques and laboratory procedures for their development of expertise and accurate recordkeeping.
  • Responsible for requisition entries to purchase supplies, materials, and equipment as instructed by PIs; will maintain laboratory supply inventory.
  • Assist with safety and regulatory compliance and inspections
  • Generate reports of experimental results for weekly/monthly lab meetings; responsible to use analysis software, spreadsheets and related reporting programs to process raw experimental data.

Necessary Administrative Skills

  • Knowledge of Microsoft WORD, EXCEL and Power Point.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Required Technical/Laboratory Skills

  • Prior animal handling experience.
  • Experience with histology, microscopy, and basic cellular and molecular biology techniques.
  • Familiarity with image editing/manipulation software (e.g. Adobe Photoshop, ImageJ, etc.).
  • Ability to acquire/develop new skills and protocols through collaborations with lab members and other labs.
