The company's mission is to revolutionize the premium cataract surgery experience by allowing surgeons to partner with their patients to achieve optimized results for every unique eye.
OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the Senior Materials Scientist, the Materials Chemist will be responsible for supporting the chemical and material characterization necessary for the development of new materials and for the raw material selection process. Key responsibilities include characterization of component polymers and elastomeric materials for current and new generations of the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL).
Requirements
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Analyze raw materials, intermediate formulation mixes, and final formulations using chemical/polymer characterization techniques including GPC, rheology, and spectroscopy methods such as NMR, UV-Vis, and Raman, as well as thermal characterization techniques like DSC, DMA, and TGA.
- Analyze elastomeric materials using conventional soft materials characterization techniques including tensiometry, spectroscopic methods, microscopy (AFM, SEM), DSC, TGA, and DMA.
- Communicate experimental results to project owners and maintain an organized data pipeline that allows for both real-time and retroactive data analysis.
- Maintain analytical instruments and consumables stock for instruments owned by LAL Chemistry.
- Work as needed at user facilities (e.g., UC Irvine) for instruments not owned at RxSight.
- Aid development of silicone-based formulations to yield materials with desired processing and performance profiles.
- Assist in process development by coordinating with members of other departments in the transfer of materials under consideration.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong instrumental analysis and laboratory skills is a must.
- Strong background in polymer physics/materials science (soft materials) is a must.
- In depth knowledge of polymeric materials characterization techniques: GPC, rheology, and spectroscopy methods such as NMR, UV-Vis, and Raman, as well as thermal characterization techniques like DSC, DMA, and TGA.
- In depth knowledge of elastomeric materials characterization techniques: tensiometry, spectroscopy methods, microscopy methods (AFM, SEM), DSC, TGA, and DMA.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply creative solutions to challenges.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and TRAINING:
- Master's degree in Materials Science (soft materials), Polymer Chemistry or Polymer Engineering is preferred. Bachelor's degree in Chemistry with significant laboratory experience is also acceptable.
- 3-5 years of relevant work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong preference for a minimum of 2 years in medical devices industry focusing on materials characterization.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
- MS Office
- Laboratory Information Management System
- Ability to learn scientific instrument software as needed.
Notice to Staffing Agencies and Search Firms:
RxSight does not accept unsolicited resumes or candidate submissions from staffing agencies or search firms for any employment opportunities.
