We are seeking an experienced, full-time Senior Laboratory Chemist to work in our St. Gabriel, LA location. The position will be on the day shift, working 6:00am-2:30pm Monday-Friday, with possible need for occasional coverage during the weekends and holidays. The Senior Lab Chemist oversees the company's main analytical lab in St. Gabriel, LA. The primary responsibilities and duties in this senior role include carrying out day-to-day QC related activities critical to company's operations and daily shipments, testing of the product lots received from company terminals and external suppliers, generating daily reports, maintenance of analytical/testing equipment, working closely with Lab Technician(s), ISO 9001 compliance, adherence to all health & safety guidelines, and providing support on QC and technical matters to other labs, company locations, and teams. This role involves working closely with variety of internal groups (QA, Operations, Logistics, Sales, Sourcing) as well as interaction with external teams (external analytical labs, suppliers, customers,). This position reports to company QA Manager, and does not have direct reports. Duties/Responsibilities Oversee strict adherence of the lab to all company health & safety policies. Perform daily testing of product lot samples for verification against specifications, generate and communicate reports to Operations and the teams directly responsible for shipments and producing certificates of analysis (COA), track and maintain all related lab records, and generate COAs when assistance to Operations is needed. Interact with QA, Operations, Sales, Customer Service/Dispatch, and suppliers to promptly respond to product quality inquiries, and address and resolve any quality issues. Responsible for maintenance and calibration of lab equipment, improving analytical and testing capabilities (methods and equipment), and carrying out lab projects. Maintain ISO compliance for the lab including requirements related to laboratory procedures (SOP), QC records, calibration records, internal reviews and audits, training, etc. As needed, provide technical and analytical support to internal teams, terminals, and other company labs related to information on product specifications and customer requirements, QC data and trends, lab equipment and supplies, and analytical procedures. Carry out and participate in routine laboratory duties related to: handling hazardous materials and chemical waste, ordering supplies, health & safety and housekeeping activities, storage of retains, shipping samples, lab administrative tasks, developing plans and goals, and other functions as needed. Participate in continuous improvement of processes, systems, and lab methods as well as in the investigation and resolution of non-conformance quality incidents. Keep current with analytical methods and instrumentation, industry standards, and other related technical areas. Provide guidance and support to Lab Technician(s). Work closely and maintain a continuous communication with QA Manager on all QC and lab related matters; carry out tasks as assigned by QA Manager and Terminal Manager(s). Required Skills/Abilities Solid scientific/analytical aptitude and problem-solving skills; detailed oriented. Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills; dedicated team-player; demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, execute plans, and generate results in a timely manner. Proficient in verbal and written communication of technical results and reports, and in writing laboratory procedures. High level working knowledge of Microsoft suite (primarily Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Sharepoint); general familiarity with and willingness to learn computer applications. Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in chemistry. Minimum 10 years of experience in a QA/QC chemical laboratory setting (chemicals distribution or production preferred) with similar senior level of responsibilities and duties. Extensive working knowledge of analytical methods and techniques, and equipment operation and maintenance including: GC, titration/auto-titrators, AA/ICP, IC, pH meter, spectrophotometer, chromatography software (Chromeleon, OpenLab CDS), TOC. Solid experience in development, qualification, and improvement of laboratory test methods and procedures following standard analytical and scientific protocols. Working knowledge of laboratory best practices, familiar with ISO 9001/Quality Management System general requirements, work to learn and track relevant industry standards. Sound background in analysis of laboratory/QC data, and trend analysis (statistical process control (SPC) a plus). Work experience or familiarity with regulations and requirements related to chemicals used in food processing industry and applications is a plus. General knowledge of chemical industry processes and operations. Physical Requirements/Work Environment Typical requirements and environment associated with working in an industrial site chemical laboratory including: handling hazardous chemicals/materials and adherence to health and safety requirements; lifting or moving weights up to 20 pounds at times; standing, sitting, walking around the lab and throughout the terminal (indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions). Ability to make occasional day trips between local sites, when needed. Availability for overnight travel to company or business partner sites, as needed (travel is not expected to exceed 10%).
