The Process Engineer applies plastics engineering and principles to the design of tools, manufacturing process development, documentation and testing for molded parts. Development of responsibilities for this position will include molding operation support activities as well as product / process improvements including cost reduction in the manufacturing process, support new product transfer to manufacturing, including tool transfers, support in the technology development in accordance with company strategies. Demonstrate knowledge in design for manufacturability, lean methodologies/ tool, design of experiments (DOE), statistical process control (SPC), and product and process characterization.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, qualify, and validate injection molding and ancillary process/tooling for new precision parts/molds.
  • Support existing products with sustaining process engineering for a 40+ injection molding machines, including trouble shooting material, tooling, process, and equipment issues.
  • Establish proper process molding condition ranges, manufacturing procedures, and quality control inputs.
  • Assist in procuring new and replacement tooling.
  • Assist in procuring related equipment including molding machines and developing capital budget.
  • Assist in developing new plastic from a "design for manufacture" plastic point of view, including material recommendations.
  • Execute cost reduction and continues improvements projects.
  • Lead process/tooling training programs, especially mold technician, group leaders and supervisor.
  • Provide tool and die engineering and processing support to the manufacturing and R&D Groups.
  • Ensure tooling modifications and designs achieve quality requirements and cost savings.
  • Coordinate quality and productivity improvements with tooling upgrade projects.
  • Utilize good program management skills to ensure milestones are met
  • Work with Molding department to develop and manage tooling modifications to positively impact machine utilization, efficiency, and quality.
  • Support and participate in new tool start-ups, including OQ/PQ protocols and reports.
  • Evaluate and analyze part design prints and apply a robust tool design to meet the customer and part quality expectations.
  • Review, modify, and approve tool designs using computer aided drafting 'CAD' and provide feedback to tool suppliers.
  • Assist Tool Room and Mold Processing personnel on troubleshooting and continuous improvements projects in injection molding.
  • Maintain an ongoing, up to date project list and be prepared to report - detailing issues, corrective actions, cost, and completion dates.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Position Qualifications and Requirements

  • B.S.in Plastics Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with related plastics injection molding design and processing experience.
  • Minimum 8 years in manufacturing engineering.
  • 8+ years as a medical plastic injection molding Processing/Tooling Engineer
  • 8+ years of hands-on engineering and/or process validation experience in an Injection Molding facility across varied machines, resins, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Detailed understanding of plastic part design, polymer material, tooling, equipment including some automation, processing medical validation.
  • RJG Master Molder certification (or other scientific molding certification).
  • Proficient in Solid Works or any other design related software is an added plus.
  • Ability to lead, guide/coach/mentor and direct team members to support Process Engineering.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Communicates effectively with Teammates at all levels of the organization with good interpersonal, judgment and organizational abilities.
  • Experience with MS Word, Excel, Project and Minitab.
  • Self-motivated, proven team player with the ability to technically lead and teach.
  • Function effectively in a participative management style environment.
