The primary function of this position is to perform medium- to high-throughput DNA testing on plant material using multiple genotyping platforms for gene/marker detection, species identification, genetic variation analysis, and SNP genotyping. It includes performing DNA extractions, setting up PCR assays, interpretation of results using software, data entry, and generating reports.

Job Responsibilities

Preparation and analysis of plant samples using various types of DNA marker systems, to enable Marker Assisted Selection for ornamental plant breeding.

Independently perform genomic DNA extractions using a liquid handling robot, conduct PCR assays, and interpret results using software to fulfil time-sensitive plant breeding and production requests.

Efficiently organize and maintain accurate files and records with spreadsheet and e-lab notebook management, for maintaining well-organized samples and reporting of accurate test results.

Molecular marker design and library prep for full-genome sequencing, enabling novel genomic research and discovery efforts.

Follow all mandated laboratory safety and quality protocols, to maintain a safe and healthy workplace.

Daily lab upkeep including proper care and use of laboratory equipment.

Requirements

Bachelors degree or higher in relevant biology field (e.g. genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology or related field) is required.

Laboratory experience through coursework and/or job experience is required.

Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize tasks, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and written, in a multi-cultural setting.

Must be able to independently execute molecular detection methods after appropriate training.

Must be highly self-motivated, with a strong interest in working with and learning about ornamental plants.

Some familiarity with genetics concepts including genetic association is preferred.

Some familiarity with genomics concepts including genome assembly and variant-calling is preferred.

Proven reliability and ability to work efficiently.

Willingness to perform routine tasks with a high level of detail and mental concentration.

Must be able work independently but also cooperatively in a team setting.

Proficient and accurate computer skills (MS Word and Excel) for reporting and database entry.

Good manual dexterity with the ability to perform repetitive motion.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.

Pay Range: $22-27/hour
