Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated Assistant Scientist with a solid educational background in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or Biochemistry. The ideal candidate will have experience in a laboratory environment, demonstrating basic laboratory and analytical skills. Key technical competencies include DNA extraction, PCR, and immunoassay, alongside proficiency in PC skills and the ability to learn new software and systems. This role requires effective communication and interaction with technical staff at all levels within a team-based environment, as well as the capacity to work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Perform processing and analysis of environmental samples for the presence of potential biological threat agents.
  • Assist with sample in-processing, DNA preparation, immunoassay, and PCR analysis.
  • Enter data into laboratory information management and sample management systems.
  • Conduct general laboratory housekeeping duties.
  • Execute robotic DNA extraction using the KingFisher Flex system.
  • Perform immunoassays via the Luminex MAGPIX system.
  • Conduct qPCR using the Life Technologies QS5 system.
  • Engage in molecular biology techniques including DNA, RNA, and protein purification and quantification, gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, and recombinant protein expression.
Essential Skills
  • B.S. or B.A. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry.
  • Experience in laboratory environments.
  • Knowledge of DNA extraction, PCR, and immunoassay techniques.
  • Proficiency in PC skills and adaptability to new software and systems.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively in a team-based environment.
  • Capability to work independently and detail-oriented.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Must be a U.S. citizen able to obtain security clearance.
  • Experience with sample management, quality assurance, and data entry.
  • Knowledge of wet chemistry and aseptic techniques.
Work Environment

The position is based in a lab environment, specifically within a secure military facility. The work schedule is a 5-day, 8-hour 1st shift from 8 am to 5 pm, Thursday to Sunday, with potential adjustments according to client needs. Additional weekend and holiday work may be required.

This is a Contract position based out of Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.
