North Dakota State University is seeking a highly qualified Laboratory Manager for the Electron Microscopy Core facility.
A part of the NDSU Office of Research and Creative Activity, the Electron Microscopy Core supports analytical SEM, TEM, and micro computed X-ray tomography characterization for biological and materials researchers across the NDSU campus, as well as industry investigators. Our mission is to provide expert guidance, maintain sophisticated instrumentation, and foster education and outreach.
We're looking for an exceptional individual who has or will develop expertise using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and micro computed X-ray tomography. This position is ideal for those who thrive in a collaborative service-oriented environment and are excited to support a diverse range of scientific projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with researchers across disciplines from the project-planning stage, through data collection and interpretation, to publication
- Prepare and analyze diverse biological and materials samples using SEM, TEM, and micro computed X-ray tomography
- Educate and support users in all aspects of research imaging and analysis
- Ensure instruments operate at peak performance
- Develop and optimize EM techniques
- Maintain the laboratory facility, assuring that supplies and equipment are ready for use
- Prepare and distribute monthly billing for services to NDSU researchers and commercial users, interfacing with NDSU Accounting
- Contribute to technical writing for publications, grant proposals, and reports
- Become an integral part of the team representing the Electron Microscopy Core to NDSU faculty, students, and the public

Responsibilities:
Laboratory Management:
- Prioritize and schedule daily laboratory activities
- Inventory, order, and store supplies and equipment needed for efficient laboratory function
- Laboratory organization and maintenance
- Participate in training, evaluation, and supervision of new laboratory employees
- Prepare and distribute monthly billing for services to NDSU researchers and commercial users
Research and Educational Activities:
- Help design and accomplish investigative studies, appropriately incorporating equipment and techniques available in the core, and developing, adapting, and implementing new methods as required
- Prepare and deliver outreach presentations, seminars, course lectures, etc. appropriate for the intended audience, from K-12 through graduate level
- Complete documentation and record-keeping. Store and share research data as appropriate.
- Develop and maintain social-media sites for the Electron Microscopy Core
Client Interaction:
- Communicate effectively with faculty, students, and other users from varied backgrounds using written and oral means (including in-person, telephone, email, Zoom, Teams, etc.) as needed to identify and fulfill research needs and build partnerships.
- Positively represent the services of the Electron Microscopy Core to NDSU and in the broader community
Salary: $65,000-80,000 Depending on experience. Plus excellent benefits!
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in scientific or engineering field with two years research experience
- Computer knowledge and experience including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and meeting software such as Zoom and Teams
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to read, write, and understand scientific/technical literature in English
- Ability to operate complex instrumentation
- Ability to work independently and with others
- Willingness to learn
Preferred Qualification: Master's or PhD degree in scientific or engineering field
