Primary Purpose
Essex seeks a Bioinformatics Scientist II. The Bioinformatics Scientist III in the Bioinformatics Department of the Biomedical Informatics and Data Science team at Essex serves as a senior scientific contributor, providing technical leadership, mentoring, and expertise across bioinformatics projects. This role independently drives high-impact analyses, leads collaborations with researchers, physicians, and engineers, and contributes to strategic decision-making in support of precision medicine and translational research programs.
Responsibilities
Lead complex bioinformatics projects and mentor junior scientists.
Provide subject matter expertise in clinical variant annotation, data modeling, and genomic data harmonization.
Partner with clinical labs and stakeholders to ensure high-quality data ingestion into MATCH and related data infrastructures.
Design and execute advanced genomic and clinical data analyses for biomarker discovery and clinical interpretation.
Contribute to bioinformatics infrastructure design, including database architecture and analytical pipelines.
Guide the design, user experience, and scientific accuracy of web-based tools and portals for end-user interaction with bioinformatics resources.
Produce and review advanced clinical reports, dashboards, and visualizations.
Support cross-functional project planning and client-facing communication.
Qualifications
Ph.D. or MS in Bioinformatics, Genetics, Computational Biology, Data Science or related fields.
5+ years of progressively responsible work in the field.
Deep expertise in medical genetics, clinical variant interpretations, and curation pipeline development.
Demonstrated experience designing and leading bioinformatics components of multi-disciplinary or cross-institutional research projects.
Deep understanding of biomedical ontologies, controlled vocabularies (e.g., SNOMED, HPO, NCIt), and data harmonization standards.
Prior experience in regulated or clinical environments (e.g., NCI, FDA, CLIA labs, or NIH-funded projects) is strongly preferred.
