The Laboratory Technician - Membranes and Thermal perform accurate and timely analytical testing of routine and non-routine membranes and material samples in accordance with appropriate laboratory and safety guidelines, ensuring that results and samples obtained meet internal and external customer requirements. Materials testing are thermal, rheological, analytical, and mechanical in nature. Some key terms to be familiar with are: material properties, membrane, flow, pressure, purity, permeate, retentate, diffusivity, selectivity, separation capacity, gas and contamination analyses, material properties, melt flow, rheology, calorimetry, viscosity, chemical resistance, tensile strength, impact strength, modulus, density, etc.

The Laboratory Technician Membranes and Thermal will also participate in laboratory investigations, equipment evaluations and qualifications, and quality improvement initiatives. The role includes assisting in the preparation and maintenance of standard operating procedure (SOP), hazard review, setting up analytical equipment, performing equipment maintenance and calibration, safeguarding samples and testing records, and performing all the above in a safe manner. At the discretion of the manager, the employee may be assigned additional tasks as needed to support the teams objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operation of membranes testing equipment with high temperatures and pressures, and high nitrogen and oxygen concentrations

  • Operation of thermal and rheological testing equipment with high temperatures and pressures, and material degradation

  • Perform analytical techniques involving gas analysis, contamination analysis, and wet chemistry (e.g., relative viscosity, chemical resistance).

  • Perform mechanical testing (e.g., tensile-, compressive-, impact-types)

  • Accurately perform all technical procedures within area of responsibility

  • Knowledgeable and proficient at the use of laboratory data management systems, maintaining logbooks and test records Document reviewer for laboratory procedures

  • Generate lab reports as requested

  • Interpret and follow material testing standards (ISO, ASTM, internal) and safety data sheets (SDS)

  • Understand the prioritization of lab tasks and reprioritization as appropriate

  • Support maintenance, modifications, improvements, troubleshooting and repairs of equipment

  • Recognize when there is a gap in documentation and operation, and recommend an appropriate path forward

  • Systematically approach troubleshooting and can assist with the resolution of most complex problems

  • Coordinate specific projects or activities as requested by direct supervisor or the Director of Innovation Management

  • Quality compliance efforts - adhere to all quality programs, policies, & procedures

  • Trainer/mentor for other operators in departmental operations

Environmental, Safety, Health, & Security (ESHS):

  • ESHS compliance efforts - adhere to all ESHS programs, policies, & procedures

  • Assume personal accountability for individual behaviors related to ESHS activities

  • Have the appropriate knowledge and tools prior to performing a task

  • Complete all required ESHS training and always remain current with applicable learning plans

  • Report all injuries to ESHS and supervision within the same shift of the incident occurring

  • Inform direct supervision of any ESHS hazards or concerns in the workplace

  • Provide feedback and coaching to coworkers on both safe and unsafe behaviors and conditions

  • Actively participate in the ESHS management system as directed by supervision

REQUIREMENTS

  • Associate degree in Material Science, Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience

  • 2-4 years of membranes and thermal testing experience and handling process gases

  • Experience with high temperature polymers

  • Good mechanical skills

  • Demonstrated ability to follow processing and testing procedures (SOP, ISO, ASTM)

  • Ability to interpret and evaluate piping and instrument diagrams (P&ID), testing procedures, and solve problems

  • Demonstrated ability in method development

  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, SharePoint,Teams)

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Ability to lift 50 lb without assistance

  • Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Ability to climb stairs

  • Ability to work overtime if needed
