Your Role:

At MilliporeSigma, as a Senior Scientist - Assay Development/Molecular Biology/NGS within our Molecular R&D group in our Rockville, you will drive and support the R&D application of disruptive technologies in the biosafety testing space. You are responsible for the overall study design, interpretation, and reporting of study results and/or creating bioinformatic pipelines. You are also responsible for the scientific integrity of technical work performed in the laboratory and are required to ensure research conduct fulfills generally accepted professional/ industry standards. Requirements also include maintaining a thorough understanding of company testing services, technical principles and applications as they apply to your position.

  • Act as the lead and subject matter expert (SME) for specific defined area(s) of the business
  • Apply laboratory techniques and skills to design and/or execute experiments that address a variety of specific problems (internally or externally driven)
  • Independently apply basic scientific principles in the design of experiments and the development of assays
  • Maintain complete and comprehensive records for assay development, application, and study integrity
  • Make detailed observations, document results and perform data analysis and interpretation of data
  • Liaise with Quality Assurance and appropriate cross-functional departmental areas to close the events and corrective actions identified during GxP laboratory testing
  • Maintain a working knowledge of lab procedures and assays
  • Responsible for creating/revising SOPs, laboratory records and other related documentation as required
  • Write technical reports for internal use and collaborates on papers for external use
  • Develop ideas and suggestions to improve standard laboratory techniques, protocols, processes and equipment
  • Contribute/author scientific publications and presents at conferences/ seminars.
  • Comply with company health and safety regulations and procedures
  • Justify business needs and drive implementation of new services.
  • Coach/train others on developing and enhancing day to day laboratory techniques
  • Provide technical advice and support for internal and external interactions such as client and regulatory audits/inspections, meetings, teleconferences
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement within Biologics; act as champion on initiatives and/or projects to drive improvement in quality and / or client service

Who You Are

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in a biologic discipline (e.g., Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Genetics, Biophysics) with 4+ years of academic and/or industry R&D experience involving next generation sequencing technology
  • Demonstrated experience of independent genomics-related assay development

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a scientific discipline (e.g., Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics) with 4+ years of academic and/or biotechnology R&D experience
  • Broad theoretical and working knowledge of field of protein-DNA interactions, and experience with relevant scientific concepts, laboratory practices, techniques, equipment, materials and mathematical analysis. This specifically applies to molecular biology and biochemistry, in vitro assay development and next generation sequencing-based applications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics of DNA melting and DNA supercoiling
  • Demonstrated understanding of physical-chemical aspects of protein-DNA interactions and kinetics of DNA processing enzymes
  • Demonstrated ability to apply nuanced differences between DNA processing enzymes (DNAPs, ligases, kinases, nucleases, etc.) for NGS assay development
  • Experience in Sanger sequencing and next generation sequencing using Illumina, Nanopore platforms
  • Knowledge of Linux operating system and expert usage of command line interface
  • Demonstrated ability to write and/or modify python/bash/perl or other language scripts for ad hoc data analysis
  • Demonstrated working experience with NGS data QC, genome assembly, and eukaryotic genome analysis/annotation tools
  • Knowledge of CRISPR systems and experience with CRISPR/Cas-based assay development is a plus

Pay Range: $117,400- $192,400

Our ranges incorporate all levels and career types available within this specific role, and are derived from relevant industry market data. Should we decide to make an offer, we will consider several factors, including but not limited to your location, skills, experience, career level, and other job-related factors.
