Apex Tool Group has an opportunity for a skilled Metallurgical Lab Technician to join our Quality Team in Apex, NC. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of metallic materials, especially steels, and hands-on experience in sample preparation and material characterization. You will be responsible for preparing metallic samples, conducting hardness/microhardness testing, material composition analysis, and microstructure analysis to ensure compliance with quality standards and customers specifications. You will also work closely with R&D engineers to support development of novel hand tools.

The Build (Responsibilities)
  • Sample Preparation: Cut, mount, grind, and polish steel samples for metallographic examination using sectioning saws, mounting presses, and automatic grinders/polishers.
  • Hardness/Microhardness Testing: Operate hardness testers (e.g., Rockwell, Vickers, Brinell) to determine material properties.
  • Chemical Analysis: Utilize equipment to verify chemical composition of steel and other alloys.
  • Microscopy: Perform optical microscopy to analyze microstructure, grain size, and material defects.
  • Documentation: Generate detailed, accurate laboratory reports and maintain test records.
  • Lab Cleaning and Maintenance: Perform routine lab cleaning and maintenance with 5S + 1 methodology.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to all laboratory safety protocols and proper handling of hazardous materials.
The Toolbox (Qualifications)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 2 plus years of working experience in a metallurgical or materials testing laboratory
  • Proficient in operating metallographic sample preparation machinery and hardness testing instruments
  • High level of proficiency in computer technology including Microsoft applications and digital image processing software

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in metallurgy, chemistry, or related engineering field is a plus
  • Strong understanding of steel types (carbon, alloy, stainless), heat treatment processes, and microstructure
