The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee/1 with the Hematology & Coagulation Laboratory at Harborview Medical Center .
This lab performs routine hematology and coagulation testing, as well as specialty testing in circulating tumor cell, bleeding, and thrombosis workup and red cell disorders. This is a busy lab with opportunities for learning from faculty and residents on current treatments and diagnostic testing on various hematology and coagulation disorders.

- Tuesday - Saturday
- Evening shift
What youll contribute:
- Perform routine clinical testing in the Hematology/Coagulation Laboratory. May perform in areas such as routine coagulation, automated cell counts, manual cell counts, differential/morphology, bone marrows, circulating tumor cell, special coagulation, red cell disorder testing, information processing, quality control, blood gas or urinalysis.
- Understand, operate, maintain, troubleshoot and perform corrective maintenance on a variety of laboratory equipment, including sophisticated computerized instruments requiring interpretative knowledge (such as multi-parameter electronic cell counters and automated coagulation analyzers) without supervision.
- Complete patient and quality control procedures within defined time limits, simultaneously coordinate multiple procedures with accuracy, prioritize workload in response to STAT requests, and work with others to ensure that testing is completed.
- Assure the quality and timeliness of patient test results by investigating problems involving specimen collection or handling. Evaluate and solve specimen problems and follow procedures for resulting and documentation.
- Understand theory and physiological importance of each test. Correlate abnormal results with pathologic and physiologic states to determine validity and reasonableness of data. Identify the technical, instrumental or physiologic cause of problems (such as patient variables or interfering substances).
- Take appropriate action on specimens with critical values, abnormal or unusual results. Document actions and findings as necessary.
- Perform and document daily quality control. Evaluate quality control statistics and make judgements concerning accuracy, reproducibility and validity of laboratory methods. Institute and document corrective action when quality control results exceed tolerance limits.
- Teach and train medical laboratory science students and new employees in theory and performance of laboratory testing. Perform competency assessment and written evaluations of trainees or employees as required.
- Perform accurate analysis on CAP and other proficiency testing materials when requested.
- Make and verify quality of reagents.
- Maintain awareness of supply stock and inform lead technologist before they are depleted.
- Exhibit working knowledge of laboratory information system software.
- Assist in development and/or evaluation of new procedures and instruments as assigned.
- Perform special projects and related duties as required.
- May be required to prepare and process samples for transport and/or testing.
What youll need:
Requirements for an MLS Trainee :
- Accredited bachelors degree in medical laboratory science OR equivalent education/experience AND
- Eligible to take the Medical Laboratory Scientist or categorical certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) within 18 months from date of hire. Failure to attain the certification within 18 months of date of hire may result in a recommendation for termination.
Requirements for an MLS 1 :
- Accredited bachelors degree in medical laboratory science OR equivalent education/experience AND
- Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent certifying organization OR certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division AND
- One (1) year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee. Up to one (1) year of on-the-job experience performing clinical testing in a Medical Laboratory Science Program externship may count toward the experience requirement.
