Job Summary
Under general supervision, support review of research projects on the behavior of food borne pathogens on processed foods. Maintain the facilities and equipment, train and supervise personnel, and develop and maintain written Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's). Manage and update safety requirements (BUAs, annual training, chemical hygiene plan, emergency evacuation readiness, disposal of chemical waste). Participate in laboratory meetings and active involvement in research-related discussions. Attend professional meetings as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
Master's degree in Food Science or Microbiology OR Bachelor's of Science in Food Science or Microbiology.
Experience using laboratory equipment including microscope, pH meter, water activity meter. Experience with aseptic technique.
Knowledge of principles of food microbiology and food analysis. Skills in Word, Excel and Access. Technical writing skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of safe working procedures and to convey and achieve these practices to others working in these laboratories. Skills in troubleshooting problems with analytical instrumentation. Skills to review research projects with respect to interpretation of data presented and analytical procedures used.
Skills to organize and prioritize a series of simultaneous and potentially conflicting priorities. Interpersonal communication skills.
Knowledge of California Canning Regulations and FDA Acidified and Low-Acid Food Regulations.

Department Overview
Food Science and Technology is a large department within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Technology. The department consists of 40 faculty members, 20 staff, and 600 undergraduate and graduate students. The department has a total estimated annual operating budget for teaching, research, outreach and support of approximately $65MM, composed of state, federal, and extramural funds, endowments, gifts, and sales income. The mission of the department is to generate knowledge about foods through research, and to apply and disseminate knowledge through teaching and outreach, with the goal of ensuring the availability of safe, nutritious, appealing food, with minimum environmental impact, for the benefit of all people.
