Senior Scientist - Upstream MSAT (Manufacturing Sciences and Technology)

Location: Andover, MA

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Minimum Education & Experience

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biology, or related field) is required.
  • PhD and Master's degree holders are welcome.
  • 6+ years of experience in bioprocessing, with a focus on mammalian cell culture and bioreactor operations.

Position Summary

As a Senior Scientist in the Upstream Mammalian MSAT team, you will play a pivotal role in supporting Pfizer's late-stage commercial biopharmaceutical and vaccine production. You will be responsible for process troubleshooting, continuous improvement, and second-generation process development. Your work will directly support laboratory-scale development, technology transfer, and commercial manufacturing at Pfizer and partner sites.

This role requires a strong foundation in mammalian cell culture, bioreactor engineering, and data analysis. You will be recognized as a technical expert, contributing to innovative process solutions and mentoring junior team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead upstream process development and optimization using mammalian cell culture systems.
  • Operate and troubleshoot bioreactors in batch, fed-batch, and perfusion modes.
  • Design and execute experiments to support process improvements and scale-down modeling.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to support technology transfer and commercial production.
  • Apply statistical tools (e.g., DoE) and data analytics to interpret complex datasets.
  • Ensure compliance with cGMP standards and contribute to regulatory documentation.
  • Mentor junior scientists and contribute to cross-functional project teams.

Required Skills & Expertise

  • Expertise in mammalian cell culture and bioreactor operation.
  • Strong background in biochemical engineering and process monitoring.
  • Proficiency in experimental design, data analysis, and laboratory automation.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and automation systems.
  • Familiarity with control systems, data acquisition, and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $55.00 - $65.00/hr.
