The University of Washingtons College of Education seeks a Research Scientist who can engage in design-based research projects from learning sciences and science education perspectives. Reporting to the Executive Director, this position involves engaging in a range of partnerships with education and community organizations focused on promoting equity in science education and climate change educationby participating in curriculum development efforts, running professional learning sessions for educators, and engaging in empirical research on learning and systems-level improvement. In support of this effort, the Research Scientist duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Bring intellectual resources to bear on equity-focused science education improvement projects.
  • Draw upon relevant literatures, STEM experts, education researchers, and STEM education networks to inform multiple equity-focused science education and climate education improvement projects.
  • Coordinate planning and implementation of these projects.
  • Contribute to grant writing and the development and management of fee-for-service contracts within UW ISME.

    Contribute to the development, use, refinement, and dissemination of resources for equitable science education.
  • Plan and deliver professional learning experiences for educators and educational leaders across various networksand engage in the co-design open education resources to support that work.

    Document and communicate developments in projects.
  • Communicate developments with university and regional K-12 stakeholders, including current and future partners in STEM education.
  • Help document the projects for internal and external audiences and stakeholders in collaboration with project partners.
  • Help develop professional presentations about the work for external audiences and stakeholders in collaboration with project partners.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Structure:
  • Establish and engage in working partnership activities with project collaborators.
  • Meet regularly with UW ISME staff and project collaborators to advance the work.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field
  • 4 years of deep knowledge of educational research and ability to engage in academic writing, OR equivalent combination of education/experience.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience working in educational settings with youth from groups that are underrepresented in STEM fields.
  • Extensive experience in educational improvement initiatives related to STEM disciplines and climate change.
  • Knowledge of contemporary perspectives on teaching and learning from equity and justice perspectives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
  • Experience convening diverse stakeholders in educational practice.
