Position Summary/Description:
The Staff Scientist position is in a gastrointestinal cell biology and immunology lab within the Department of Pediatrics. Our laboratory studies the pathogenesis of the disease necrotizing enterocolitis ( NEC ), which primarily affects premature infants. The Staff Scientist will assist in developing and conducting research projects, including experiment design, data analysis and documentation of experiment results. In addition, their primary duties and responsibilities are listed below.This employee will investigate through laboratory experimentation, plan projects, perform general data analysis, prepare, and present reports, contribute to safety control protocols within the laboratory, and supervise technicians, students and resident trainees in lab investigation. The incumbent will be expected to conduct difficult/complex lab testing, develop methods and procedures to be used in research protocols and experiments, analyze and present data, and assist the Principal Investigator with grant proposals, reports, and research publications.
Specific laboratory techniques that the incumbent will be expected to perform include: in vitro and in vivo experiments and handle human biopsy resections and mice, cell and tissue culture, light and fluorescent microscopy, as well as other instruments, process primary animal tissues for cell isolation, run qRT- PCR , flow cytometry, western blot analysis, assist in mouse colony management and mouse experiments, necropsy and breeding and immunostaining techniques.
Education and Experience:
- Experience supervising trainees in performing laboratory research.
- A record of authorship of manuscripts in research publications, with at least some first- or senior-author publications. A record of contributing to funded grants, although not necessarily obtaining a grant as PI.
- Preference given to candidates with prior experience with especially molecular biology, but also animal model work, and/or tissue culture with primary cells.
Essential Skills:
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and with a group.
- Ability to utilize a variety of computer software and equipment (general and lab specific).
- Ability to provide excellent customer service.
- Ability to independently plan and execute basic science experiments including but not limited to
- molecular biology, cell culture and mouse experiments.
- Ability to organize and tabulate data; ability to ensure quality control of data collection.
- Ability to perform minor repairs and operate equipment and instruments in support of research
- laboratory, field, or clinical programs with limited supervision.
- Ability to assist with maintenance of inventory of equipment, supplies, and related research materials.
- Experience working as an independent bench scientist after receiving their degree.
