Mechanical Development Engineer
About Lumen:
Lumen is at the forefront of metabolic health, empowering individuals to optimize their well-being through personalized insights. Our innovative, first-of-its-kind device-to-app technology utilizes advanced CO2, temperature, humidity, and flow sensors to instantly analyze your breath. This provides real-time feedback on your body's fuel source (carbohydrates or fats) and offers a comprehensive, long-term analysis of your metabolic health. By tracking the impact of nutrition, activity, sleep, and stress, Lumen coaches users to make better choices, ultimately improving mitochondrial functionality and metabolic flexibility.
About the Hardware Team:
Our Hardware (HW) team is critical to Lumen's innovation and product excellence. We are responsible for the end-to-end development and validation of our devices, adapting designs to meet rigorous mass production manufacturing standards and tooling requirements. In addition to the product lifecycle responsibility, the HW team actively researches new sensor integrations, explores novel form factors, and undertakes other strategic activities that directly support the company's key performance indicators (KPIs). We are a multidisciplinary group committed to pushing the boundaries of what's possible in consumer health technology.
About the Role:
We are seeking a highly motivated and hands-on Mechanical Development Engineer to join our multidisciplinary innovation team. In this pivotal role, you will assume end-to-end ownership of the mechanical design for Lumen's core device and its associated test systems.
You will collaborate closely with experts in electronics, firmware, and biofeedback analysis, contributing to both current device improvements and the early-stage development of future accessories and essential testing equipment. A key aspect of this role involves participating in ongoing research for new sensor integrations and exploring potential form factors. This position uniquely bridges mechanical design, complex sensor integration, rapid prototyping, and critical engineering support, playing a vital part in maintaining and enhancing Lumen's hardware excellence as we continue to grow and innovate.
Key Responsibilities:
Mechanical Design Leadership: Lead the mechanical design of complex device components and related test systems, guiding them from initial concept through validated prototypes, and ultimately to mass production-ready final parts.
Sensor & Microcontroller Integration: Expertly integrate both mechanically and electronically various sensors and microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi, using platforms that mimic device constraints) into lab setups and device concepts.
Complex Environmental Handling: Design mechanical core components required to accurately handle and integrate flow, pressure, humidity, temperature, and other intricate mechanical constraints. Expertise in these domains is essential.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with production and engineering teams to proactively identify and resolve design, quality, and test-related challenges.
Innovation & Prototyping: Co-develop and rigorously test innovation boards and prototypes that pave the way for future hardware directions and product lines.
Lab Management: Set up and meticulously maintain the mechanical lab environment, including defining needs, managing tools, and ensuring all equipment is calibrated and ready for use.
What We're Looking For:
Experience: 3+ years of proven experience in mechanical design, with a strong preference for backgrounds in consumer electronics or multidisciplinary hardware environments.
CAD Proficiency: High proficiency in 3D CAD tools.
Simulation Skills: Experience with flow/thermal simulation is a significant advantage.
Domain Expertise: Familiarity with pressure and flow system design, as well as with temperature and humidity gradients and their associated physical principles.
Hands-on Electronics: Hands-on experience with electronics integration (e.g., Arduino, various sensors, building test rigs, etc.).
Test System Development: Prior work in test system development or building prototyping setups is a strong plus.
Personal Attributes: Strong attention to detail, a proactive ownership mindset, and excellent ability to manage both internal and external interfaces.
Communication: Fluent English communication skills (written and verbal).
Startup Mindset: Comfortable and thriving in a fast-paced, cross-functional, and global startup environment.
