Job Description Summary:

Schmid College is seeking a Science Lab Technician or Senior Lab Technician capacity to fill this position. The tasks and duties associated with the Science Lab Technician or Senior Lab Technician position will vary based on the candidates experience, skills, knowledge, and abilities.Works with and assists faculty and instructors in the development and implementation of instructional laboratories in thephysical sciences. Performs skilled technical work regarding the preparation and maintenance of instructional laboratory set-ups, materials, supplies, and equipment. May involve laboratory work in one or more of the physical science disciplines.

Responsibilities:

Science Lab Technician or Senior Science Lab technician
Laboratory Preparation

  • Work with course Lab Coordinators in planning, developing and implementing laboratory exercises and experiments
  • Set up laboratory equipment and apparatus
  • Dispense materials and supplies per enrollment numbers
  • Prepare and appropriately label solutions, chemicals and supplies.
  • Prepare and update prep sheets each semester
  • Work to ensure laboratory spaces are clean, usable and in safe working order.
  • Direct and supervise student workers hired to assist in the above duties.
Lab Equipment and Supply Management
  • Perform routine maintenance on the lab equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Clean and test equipment related to experimentation or other scheduled labs
  • Track the use, storage and location of lab equipment used and take inventory at least annually.
  • Order supplies using PeopleSoft or Pcard and reconcile Pcard monthly.
  • Track back-ordered items and work with vendors to get the best pricing.
  • Assemble, test and store new equipment and supplies.
Instructional Support
  • Assist undergraduate students on various lab and course-related matters upon request and resolve and troubleshoot lab issues.
  • Encourage and enforce student compliance with lab policies, procedures and safety regulations.
Senior Lab Technician
  • Work closely with faculty to improve the labs with upgraded experiments.
  • Assist in the development and preparation of instructional materials and visual aids.
  • Provide input on new equipment and instrumentation purchases.
  • Communicate issues and resolutions to lab instructors.
  • Coordinate training of new instructors on new experiments or equipment.
Required Qualifications:

Science Lab Technician

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in chemical and/or physical sciences
  • 1-2 years of Working knowledge of operation, maintenance, and proper storage of laboratory equipment, apparatus, and materials
  • Working knowledge of the basic principles and practices of science laboratories
  • Demonstrated skills in laboratory techniques of the physical sciences
  • Working knowledge of operation, maintenance, and proper storage of visible, UV, IR spectrometers, HPLC, GC, and LC
  • Ability to keep and maintain essential laboratory records regarding the use, maintenance, and storage of laboratory equipment, apparatus, materials, and supplies
  • Demonstrated ability to perform arithmetic calculations to properly and effectively prepare, allocate, and maintain instructional laboratory supplies and materials.
  • Working knowledge of safe laboratory practices
  • Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, and electronic mail software
  • Technical ability to learn and use enterprise software required for this position
  • Working knowledge of the internet as an informational resource
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and needs associated with a large volume of laboratory classes
  • Ability to evaluate resource needs and appropriately request additional resources as needed
  • Ability to innovatively meet required needs with available resources
  • Ability to interpret and apply departmental laboratory policies, regulations, and procedures
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work constructively and cooperatively with other staff, department faculty, and college administrators
Senior Lab Technician in addition to the requirements above, the Senior Lab Technician would also need to have
  • 5 or more years of Working knowledge of operation, maintenance, and proper storage of laboratory equipment, apparatus, and materials
  • Substantial college-level coursework in one or more of the physical sciences
Desired Qualifications:
  • Substantial college-level coursework in one or more of the physical sciences
  • Experience in prepping laboratory supplies, materials, and reagents in either an academic instructional or research setting.
  • Ability to work one late shift during the week beginning in the late morning / early afternoon and ending at night. (Standard working hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. This position may require working some evenings or early mornings between 7:30 am or 6 pm.
