Role and ResponsibilitiesThe candidate will apply their technical knowledge and experience in materials (Metals and Plastics) to:Guide decisions related to materials selection for customer partsLead and facilitate RandD for new materials in the powder bed fusion processPerform evaluation and testing of materialsFacilitate technical aspects of outsourced heat treating and testingManage internal projects to in-source heat treating, destructive testing, and non-destructive testing capabilitiesPerform new product introduction through customer qualification processes by defining and optimizing processes before parts enter production.The ideal candidate has experience in a production environment with selection and evaluation of materials for additive manufacturing. Interpersonal skills are critical for properly communicating with customers and internal stakeholders.The candidate will be expected to evaluate new materials, perform failure analysis, provide technical support internally and externally, and provide innovative solutions to meet company objectives.Primary Tasks:Provide expert guidance on selection of materials, heat treating, post-processing, and testing options for customer parts. This includes regular meetings with customers.Identify and propose new materials to increase our capabilities and meet industry trendsPrescribe testing scope for material characterization and allowables developmentSelect and manage material testing and evaluation (density, microscopy, destructive testing, NDT, failure analysis, chemical analysis, and others)Review and approve material certifications and test reports from suppliersContinually Improve our post-processing methods through new technology, methods, or applicationsWrite material and process-related procedures to incorporate into the Quality Management SystemDevelop internal or external communications in the form of white papers, slide presentations, webinars, and live presentations related to our materials, process, and RandDRepresent Cumberland Additive in standardization body meetings, consortiums, trade shows, and with accreditation bodies.Perform hands-on testing and evaluation using destructive testing frames, chemistry analyzers, microscopy equipment, and othersLead advanced materials engineering programs (material/product/process development)Lead statistical process control initiativesLead operational and supply chain cost reduction and optimization projectsProvide guidance on facility improvements, equipment selection, and in-sourcingGuide the purchase of materials and applications of coatings and surface finishesCreate and maintain work instructions related to materials, test methods, and post-processing.Perform procedural and hands-on support of vacuum furnace operation.Secondary Tasks, as assigned:Engineering and ManufacturingMaintain a general working knowledge of powder bed fusion AM machines (SLM, GE Arcam, EOS, etc.)Assess part characteristics for manufacturability, material selection, equipment selection, and design optimizationCreate build files, layouts, and use cost estimation modelsPrepare bills of material and routingsLead and provide technical direction for techniciansProvide "hands-on" support with printing and inspection equipmentCustomer ProgramsAssist in assembling quotations in response to customer RFQ'sLead customer projects as the assigned project engineerLead and/or participate in regular customer meetingsMonitor and manage project costs in respect to the established budgetAnticipate problems and concerns relevant to project management and provide timely solutionsCoordinate document submittals, approvals, distribution, and revision controlInitiate purchase requisitions for tools, fixtures, operational equipment, and outside servicesMaintain a strong working relationship wit the customerPerform completion of project closeout activities inclusive of lessons learned sessionsOccasional travel may be required to support project or program goalsQuality
