This is a specialized laboratory scientist position responsible for providing technical and analytic support for the Newborn Screening (NBS) Laboratory Section and acts as the subject matter expert for the analysis of clinical newborn screening specimens for lysosomal storage disorders and inborn errors of metabolism using complex bioanalytical tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) methods. These methods largely focus on the utilization of MS/MS, including but not limited to electrospray ionization (ESI), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and flow injection analysis (FIA). The specialist position provides highly technical laboratory analytical support for and acts as an expert resource in the Newborn Screening Section. In conjunction with NBS and Metabolic clinical staff, the specialist engages in the development and troubleshooting of complex MS/MS bioanalytical procedures and analyses. Working closely with other laboratory staff, this staff member also performs a broad range of additional complex clinical laboratory assignments testing dried blood spot specimens from newborns, performing analyses, and providing technical feedback. As the subject matter expert, the laboratory specialist supports the NBS MS/MS testing areas and act as the technical advisor to NBS Program management and NBS laboratory personnel for lysosomal storage disorders and inborn errors of metabolism. This position is responsible for expanding the MS/MS capabilities of the NBS lab, beginning with the improvement and design of primary and/or secondary testing methodologies for homocystinuria (HCU), X-linked adrenal leukodystrophy, Mucopolysaccharidosis Type II, and future disorders added to the recommended uniform screening panel (RUSP). The laboratory scientist specialist position is integral in bringing on additional MS/MS assays for Newborn Screening disorders for higher tiered testing, multiplexing MS/MS assays, and working with CDC and APHL subject matter experts and other state health laboratories to validate new assays. This process includes all aspects from the research of NBS-relevant analytes and assay design through integration of results into the LIMS. Other duties include writing procedure manuals, adherence to the BOL biosafety manual, maintaining accurate records during the validation process as well as preparation of validation documents for approval. This staff member trains laboratory staff on the new procedures and work with Laboratory Information Management staff to report results to submitters.
