In accordance with Letter of Understanding #1 - Student Employees, and under the direct supervision of the Manager, BC Beverage Technology Access Centre (BC BTAC), the Student assists the supervisor with activities related to organizing and maintaining equipment and supplies in the Science laboratory, troubleshooting, repairing and optimizing equipment
Functions and Duties
The Student will assist the supervisor by performing the following duties:
1.Preparing equipment and material for analytical tests, assisting with preparation of solutions, media, and cultures.
Ensuring the safe and correct operation of equipment.
Maintaining science laboratory and equipment such as glassware, computers, microscopes, and other science lab equipment (i.e. GC, GCMS, HPLC, PCR, electrophoresis).
Lab safety inspections.
Maintaining appropriate records and documentation for regulatory compliance (i.e. ISO 17025, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TOG)).
Complying with standard biosafety and chemical safety practices as defined by the Public Health Agency of Canada.
Ensuring safe storage of chemicals and the safe collection, transportation, handling, and disposal of hazardous and glass waste.
Maintaining records of lab inventory and lab test results.
Maintaining confidential client data.
Performs other duties as assigned
Position Specific Functions Education and Experience
Enrolled in a post-secondary program at Okanagan College; students enrolled in science program will be preferred.
Prior work experience is an asset, including working in a science laboratory and assisting in the development of laboratory standard operating procedures.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in the use of a variety of computer software applications
- Works effectively both independently and as part of a team with an aptitude for working in a collegial and collaborative environment
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Well-developed organizational skills
- Detail-oriented
- Proficiency in cleaning and making reagents in a laboratory
- Ability to lift and move laboratory equipment (up to 30 pounds)
- Ability to distinguish colour to interpret colourimetric tests
- Ability to keep accurate and complete record
