Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to employee success and we believe that a comprehensive employee benefits program is an important and meaningful part of the compensation employees receive. Review more information at BNL | Benefits Program
The Physics Department is deeply involved in the development of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a next-generation facility that will advance the long-term vision for nuclear physics. In December 2019, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) approved the EIC project by issuing Critical Decision 0 (CD-0), or "mission need," and selected Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) as the host site. The realization of this facility is a top priority for the QCD community in the United States. The BNL EIC group has played a major role in developing the EIC's scientific case, building detector subsystems, and integrating physics requirements into the design of the EIC interaction region.
The EIC group at BNL's Physics Department has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate. The selected candidate is expected to take a leading role in studying the origin of Lambda hyperon transverse polarization in electron scattering experiments--such as the CLAS12 experiment at Jefferson Lab's 12 GeV program and the ePIC experiment at the EIC. The program includes data analysis involving polarized targets at Jefferson Lab as well as full detector and physics simulations for ePIC. In addition, the candidate will collaborate with leading theorists to explore connections between Lambda polarization in exclusive production and Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). This position involves both experimental data analysis and feasibility studies for the EIC experiment. For inquiries, please contact Dr. Zhoudunming Tu (...).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The selected candidate is expected to participate in the data analysis of the CLAS 12 experiment with Run Group A and C recorded in recent years and the ePIC experiment at the EIC. The successful candidate is also expected to participate service works required by both collaborations. In addition, the successful candidate will be working closely with the EIC group for extending the study of Lambda hyperon polarization to the EIC, where works on EIC ep and/or eA event generators and detector simulations are envisioned. Finally, she/he will be expected to join some of the group efforts in hardware building projects as well as future R Ds.
Close interaction with all our collaborators in the EIC group and the theory group at BNL will be essential for progress on all aspects of this program.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ph.D. in Nuclear or Particle physics.
Experience with high- and medium-energy nuclear and particle physics experiments.
Understanding of experimental techniques and measurements in the field of nuclear / high-energy physics.
A strong background in C++ programming.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Familiarity with CLAS 12 experiment at Jefferson Lab and the ePIC experiment at the EIC.
Familiarity with experimental measurements of polarization observables and/or exclusive reactions.
Familiarity with ep and eA MC generators and detector simulations.
OTHER INFORMATION:
Please include a statement of research (2-3 pages) with your application.
Reference letters may be requested via an electronic submission process as your candidacy is considered.
The position is currently limited to 2 years and may be renewed for one more year depending on performance and availability of funds.
Candidates must have received a Ph.D. by the commencement of employment.
BNL policy requires that after obtaining their PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $78500 - $81500 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
Brookhaven National Laboratory requires all non-badged personnel including visitors to produce a REAL-ID or REAL-ID compliant documentation to access Brookhaven National Laboratory - view more information at www.bnl.gov/real-id. This is due to nationwide identification requirements for federal site access as required by the federal REAL ID Act. Those not in possession of a REAL ID-compliant document will not be permitted to access the site which includes access to the Laboratory for interviews.
