Be essential at the California Department of Fish andWildlife (CDFW). Lead a broad range of diverse biological and regulatory tasksincluding functioning as the regional urban wildlife coordinator, investigatingwildlife-related reports, acting as regional liaison for wildliferehabilitation and restricted species programs and significant wildlife die-offincidents. Investigate reports of abandoned, injured or diseased wildlife.Engage in public outreach and education. Responsible for responding to public safetycalls along with Law Enforcement personnel. Competently use firearms as per theDepartments Policy for Non-Enforcement Personnel. Must be willing and capableto competently use and possess wildlife restraint drugs and equipment.Incumbent will design and implement or direct urban wildlife managementprojects and develop and utilize management strategies to reduce human-wildlifeconflicts. Additional duties include conducting biological studies and surveysof various species and habitats and acts as regional representative for theDepartments Private Lands Management.
The incumbent will perform population assessment andsurveys, research, telemetric monitoring, movement and survival monitoring onblack bears and other large mammal species and provide a broad range of diversebiological and environmental review. Works closely with regional staff, LawEnforcement Division, Wildlife Health Laboratory, and federal, state and localagencies. Perform investigations associated with wildfire, drought, disease, orcontaminants. Good communication skills are important as the incumbent willparticipate in public meetings and seminars. The primary geographical focus ofthis position will be in Los Angeles County but may lead work in any part ofthe Region and occasionally statewide will be required.

Working ConditionsOfficelocation will be at Seal Beach CDFW office. Work hours may be 10+ hours perday, atypical hours and on weekends. Exposure to temperature extremes is to be expected.Some overnight travel and camping will be required. Ability to drive a4-wheel-drive vehicle and hike cross-country to remote survey sites in ruggedterrain. Incumbent must be willing to work in remote locations and alone ifnecessary. Flying in helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft is required. Ability touse a computer keyboard in a sitting and/or standing position several hours aday. Ability to lift heavy and irregular items up to 40 lbs. Will interact withregional and branch staff, and members of the public via e-mail, telephone, andin-person. Must attend meetings. Ability to wear a field uniform, asappropriate. Possession of valid driver license required. Ability to drive upto 8-hours. Must be vaccinated against rabies virus with adequate currentantibody titer or willing to receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations. Mustfeel comfortable with potential close contact with imperiled and/or confinedwild animals. Must complete mandatory wildlife capture training and firearmstraining within 6 months of hire. Must be willing and capable to competentlyuse firearms as per the Departments Policy for Non-Enforcement Personnel. Mustbe willing and capable to competently use and possess wildlife restraint drugsand equipment. Must be willing to handle live animals, carcasses, and conductsimple tissue sampling and necropsies.
