Overview As a Research Associate (RA) you will plan, supervise and perform research relating to paraphysiological changes in the heart and skeletal muscles in consultation with the Research Director. Responsibilities Prepare experimental findings for publication and presentation at conferences and for grant proposals. Teach research staff how to utilize the specialized electrophysiological equipment and computer software packages; provide clinical supervision for Research Assistant, Research Technician and Research Fellow. Perform in vivo monitoring of various systems in rats. Perform microdissections to isolate nerve muscle biopsies and hearts from rats. Utilize the in vitro EMG chamber and monitors nerve action potential, muscle action potential to nerve and/or muscle stimulation in rats during fatigue and drug exposure. Prepare frozen sections of skeletal muscles and measures changes in amplitude and time course of the responses of heart/skeletal muscle using specialized software. Perform all statistical analysis of data using Sigmastat package and generates graphs representing numerical changes in the responses. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Checks that equipment is functioning properly; reports any problems to Director. Qualifications Medical Degree or PhD in Biology with specialty field in Physiology. 3-5 years of experience in electrophysiological studies on function of heart and skeletal muscles. Good verbal and written communication skills. Skilled in the microdissections of tissue. Skilled in operation of computers and electrophysiological equipment. Knowledge of research grant preparation. Broad knowledge of scientific principles, biological structures and laboratory techniques. Pay Range USD $20.00 - USD $20.00 /Hr.
