The Earth Systems Research Center, University of New Hampshire (UNH), has an immediate opening for a Research Scientist II. The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary research team consisting of a global ecologist (Dr. Jingfeng Xiao, UNH) and a biological scientist and dynamic global vegetation model (DGVM) modeler (Dr. John Kim, USDA Forest Service). The Research Scientist will be employed via UNH and work remotely. This position is funded by USDA Forest Service and can be renewed annually depending on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Duties/Responsibilities

(80%)

  • This successful candidate will use a DGVM to create future projections of vegetation type, structure, and function for Alaska under CMIP6 climate change scenarios at 0.25 spatial resolution. This successful candidate will also lead preparation of journal articles and conference presentations.

(10%)

  • The successful candidate will lead and/or participate in proposal writing and grant applications.

(10%)

  • The successful candidate will also help supervise PhD students and postdoctoral research associates.

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • A Ph.D. in areas such as forestry/natural resources, ecology, ecohydrology, remote sensing, atmospheric sciences/meteorology, biogeosciences, environmental science, or a related field is required.

  • Applicants should be enthusiastic, creative, and highly motivated. Ideal candidates should have one or more of the following experiences: dynamic global vegetation modeling (or ecosystem modeling/Earth system modeling), satellite remote sensing, processing of large data sets, machine learning, and synthesis of in-situ observations.

  • Strong communication, writing, and programming skills and publication record multiple years of experience in postdoctoral research are highly desirable.
