Organization and Position Overview

Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact.

Responsibilities:

In this role, the Chemist would be responsible for transfer of chemical processes from development labs to the pilot plant to enable translation to cGMP production of kilogram quantities of API to supply clinical trials. The Chemist would be actively involved in receiving chemistry from early phase process chemistry and medicinal chemistry labs: evaluating the safety of the incoming procedures in collaboration with the safety group and process engineering, ordering and staging chemicals, authoring batch records, obtaining reference materials and participating in setting up analytical methods, performing familiarization reactions to ensure plant readiness of process steps including chemical reactions, distillations, extractions, and crystallization /isolations at the Medicines Foundry. Performing and documenting Definitive Lab Trials of processes to confirm plant readiness and use-test key raw materials. Training and assisting less experienced scientists in the Process Translation and Execution labs. Participation in the development, supervision and mentoring of other chemists, possibly technicians.

Basic Requirements

  • BS, MS or PhD in Chemistry
  • 15+ years' experience developing and scaling reactions from gram to hundreds of grams scale.
  • 10+ years of experience with small molecule processing in a cGMP environment.

Additional Skills and Preferences

  • Supervisory experience, ideally of small teams
  • Expected to maintain a safe, clean, well-organized, and productive chemistry lab.
  • Good working knowledge of organic chemistry and mechanisms and application to reaction improvement and optimization.
  • Experience with a variety of analytical techniques: HPLC/UPLC, MS, NMR, GC, KF, DSC, XRD, etc.
  • Understanding of implications of scale-up on chemical processes and the impact on process efficiency, safety and quality.
  • Process quantification and tying up mass balance for products and by-products.
  • Experience tracking and quantifying fate and purge of impurities throughout multi-step chemical processes.
  • Familiarity with physical/solid state chemistry: crystallization development and optimization, understanding of polymorphism and particle size control, and safe handling of solids/dry end processing.
  • Proficiency with the purification of chemicals via chromatography and distillation.
  • Maintaining a well-organized and detailed lab notebook with accurate descriptions of the chemistry and observations to enable the preparation of technical packages/technical transfers and accurate replication in receiving labs.
  • Participate in training, mentoring, and supporting chemists in safe and practical process chemistry techniques during demonstrations and material preparations.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally across teams and levels with engineers, analytical chemists, plant operators, safety and quality representatives.

Other Information:

  • Initial location at Lilly Technology Center, Indianapolis.
