Job Description:

  • General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

Prepares, maintains, and inventories the physics and earth science laboratories, prep areas, and storage rooms of the Departments of Environmental, Geographic, and Public Health Sciences. Assists the Department with equipment and supply orders for course- and research-related activities and those purchased through internal and external funding, including grants. Works directly with faculty in the department to ensure equipment, apparatus, and supplies are maintained, repaired, replaced, and compliant. Sets up and calibrates equipment and apparatus for laboratory courses regularly. In addition, supports the Environmental Safety Officer (ESO) by assisting with safety procedures and equipment in EGPHS.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates, solicits quotes, and orders physical equipment, apparatus, and consumable supplies for laboratories and classes. Monitors the ordering system in reference to pending/complete orders with vendors. Picks up supplies/materials at local stores when needed.
  • Keeps updated inventories of lab equipment and supplies.
  • Works directly with faculty in the department each semester to set a work schedule that maximizes the lab workflow. Maintains availability during work hours to assist faculty and students with lab needs.
  • Provides technical assistance, support, and training to faculty, instructors, and staff in the use of equipment and apparatus, as necessary.
  • Contacts the chemistry technician for purchases of chemicals and following CHP protocol. (The chemistry technician will then review, order, inventory, and deliver requested chemicals to EGPHS. The chemistry technician will prepare faculty needed solutions for student laboratories and dispose of lab-generated chemical waste.)
  • Collaborate with Information Technology to support hardware and software in computer-assisted laboratories.
  • Maintains cleanliness and safety of student laboratories, preparatory, and storage areas to established standards. Inspects laboratory and safety equipment. Reviews First Aid boxes and adequately restocks prior to the start of each semester. On a monthly basis, flushes eyewashes and monitors temperatures. Obtains First Aid replacement supplies from the chemistry technician.
  • Sets up laboratories according to the faculty's instructions.
  • Performs post-laboratory equipment/apparatus restocking, ensuring that lab benches/tables are free of debris, equipment, apparatus, and supplies are secured and placed back into the preparatory and/or storage areas.
  • Obtains Safety Data Sheet from Environmental Safety Officer (ESO) upon request.
  • Member of the Fitchburg State University Safety Committee.

Equipment

  • Repairs and maintains laboratory equipment or arranges for repair by outside vendors.
  • Prepares quotes for new equipment and service of existing equipment.
  • Supervises equipment repairs.
  • Provides technical support to faculty.
  • Interfaces with equipment manufacturers and software providers regarding troubleshooting system problems.

Special Duties

  • Hires and supervises student employees.
  • Instructs student employees on laboratory safety and provides them necessary training.
  • Follows procedures and guidelines of the university's Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) and any EGPHS/FSU standard operating procedures.
  • Reports unsafe working conditions, incidents, and/or faulty safety equipment or hoods to Environmental Safety Officer (ESO).
  • Performs other related laboratory duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Requirements:

Qualifications Required at Hire:

  • At least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in laboratory work.
  • Ability to maintain accurate inventory and shelving records.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to use computers for word processing, data entry/retrieval, and data acquisition programs.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with faculty, staff, and students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, Engineering, Geology/Earth Science, Material Science, or related field.
  • Two years or more of full-time or equivalent part-time technical or professional experience in physical laboratory settings including high-school physics laboratory and/or applied industrial workshops.

Qualifications Acquired on Job:

  • Knowledge of the function and operation of college physical science laboratories.
  • Knowledge of calibration and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding hazardous waste management and environmental compliance.
  • Ability to understand, apply and explain policies, procedures and guidelines governing activities within the department.
  • Skill in operating state of the art specialized equipment and related software.

Additional Information:

This is a part-time, 22.5 hours/week, benefited, non-exempt position. The position is governed by the AFSCME/1067, Council 93 Collective Bargaining Agreement. The agreement outlines the grade and step compensation model with an annual salary of $36,071.56 which is non-negotiable in adherence with the CBA. Schedule is dependent on the class schedule for the semester. The application deadline is 6/27/25.
