Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a

LS Sr. Computational Genomics Scientistwho will support research and development in the Genetic Medicine Program at the newly established research center - Palo Alto Epidemiology Research and Information Center for Genomics at the VA hospital.

Our highly dedicated bioinformatics team works with petabytes of genomic data, agile computing environments including on premise HPC and public cloud platforms, and high-profile academicians and industry leaders, to help transform big data genomics practices and translate bioinformatics research to facilitate precision health and medicine.

This a full-time position, located on site in

Menlo Park, CA.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collects, curates, analyzes, and documents public databases of biomolecules to enrich resources for genomics research;

Gathers and examines experimental data and defines logical data sets, exercising independent judgment with strong analytical capabilities;

Verifies validity of scientific experiments and data gathered. Ensure data is accurate and reliable;

Use tools such as GWAS, pathway analysis, and machine learning technique to analyze and interpret large human genetic data including:

DNA-seq data generated from large human cohorts

RNA-Seq

Methyl-Seq

SNP-array

data modalities (sequencing to clinical claims data)

external datasets (ENCODE, GTEx)

Develops, implements, and evaluates scientific data management processes and standards, including building data analysis and interpretation pipelines.

Identifies necessary resources, develops plans for data-related projects, and determines timelines and milestones;

Responsible for the development of scientific data testing systems, including design, documentation, implementation and reporting;

Responsible for implementation of study-specific procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and internal best practices.

Writes papers describing studies, methodologies and results for publication in quality peer reviewed journals and to support grant submissions;

Presents findings at scientific meetings;

Other duties as assigned.

1-2 years of relevant experience (including during degree);

Desired:

Degree in computer science, computational physics/biology, bioinformatics, genetics, or a related field;

Experience with genomic data analysis or massive scale data analysis;

Experience in at least one relevant programming language (Python, Java, C++, Perl, Django, Ruby on Rails, etc.).
