Summary
To perform accurate and timely clinical laboratory services using current technology.
Duties for a Moderate Complexity Laboratory:
- Following the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
- Maintaining records which demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Adhering to the laboratory's Quality Control policies and documenting all Quality Control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance
- Following the laboratory's policies, including taking and documenting corrective actions, whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
- Being able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or test result reporting and correcting the problem or notifying the appropriate supervisor
- Documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Assist and perform research and development activities as needed.
- Perform accurate and timely laboratory testing by analyzing proficiency testing samples according to instructions and complete within the allowable time frame with at least 90% accuracy.
- Attends and participates in all scheduled meetings and in-services.
- Answers the telephone promptly and courteously and speaks clearly and professionally.
- Assume responsibility of the department as appropriate in the absence of the supervisor.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Possess a current license issued by the state in which the laboratory is located, if such licensing is required.
AND
- Possess current certification by U.S. ASCP, AMT certification if taken after 2014, for MLS/CLS ONLY ASCPi (international) certification if taken after 2003.
AND
- Be a Doctor of Medicine, osteopathy, or doctor of podiatric medicine licensed to practice medicine, osteopathy, podiatry in the state in which the laboratory is located, or have earned a doctoral, master's, or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
OR
- Licensed and in good standing in California as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
OR
- You graduated from a bachelor's degree or master's degree clinical laboratory technologist program that was NAACLS as a medical Laboratory Scientist program when you graduated.
OR
- You have a Bachelor's degree (baccalaureate) with specific course requirements:
- 16 semester or equivalent quarter units of chemistry, which must include clinical chemistry OR analytical and biochemistry.
- 18 semester or equivalent quarter units of biology, which must include hematology, immunology, and medical microbiology.
- 3 semester or equivalent quarter units of physics (light and electricity).
AND
- Minimum one year of post-baccalaureate clinical training as a CLS.
OR
- Minimum one year of work experience as a CLS performing high complexity testing in hematology, urinalysis, chemistry, blood bank, and microbiology.
- Training or work experience must be comprehensive to cover all areas of the clinical laboratory.
- Training or work experience must be in a clinical laboratory. For a list of training programs approved by the Department, see CLS Training Programs link.
- Official verification of training or work experience must be on letterhead and signed by the training coordinator or laboratory director, and must show the beginning and ending dates of the training or experience. This information should cover all areas in which the rotation was completed with a description of the clinical laboratory tests or examinations performed.
