This is technical field and laboratory work in sampling and performing physical, chemical and biological examination of natural and potable water, domestic and industrial wastewater, air quality, solid waste, and related samples.

Assigned to one of the five areas in a NELAP/ ISO 17025 laboratory for sampling and sample analysis of water; wastewater and other environmental waters. The five areas are the Water Lab; Biology Lab; Wastewater Lab; Nutrient Lab or Field Sampling. Assignments will be rotated for cross training. An employee in this class is responsible for collecting representative on-site samples at predetermined locations, collecting various samples for analytical procedures, performing physical tests, professional procedures, and obtaining data required for process control and plant efficiency determinations. The employee is required to use independent judgment in performing tests and analysis and collecting and maintaining scientific data under varying conditions. Under supervision and with experience and training, employee will be required to perform more complex tests and procedures using specialized laboratory instrumentation. Employees will assume responsibility for overall performance of laboratory activities in the absence of the Environmental Chemist. Work is subject to review by supervisor through reported results obtained and by observing performance of laboratory activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Analyzes laboratory samples; calibrates and troubleshoots instruments; prepares reagents and standards
  • Performs chemical and/or biological tests resulting in data for various monitoring projects for regulatory agency reporting
  • Collects samples from water and/or wastewater plants, predetermined locations throughout the distribution systems, drinking water production wells, wells with specialized sampling equipment and apparatus, and possibly samples from canals, rivers, lakes, and ocean with or without specialized sampling equipment
  • Performs field testing during sampling; maintains records of tabulated test results
  • Performs data entry and result calculations
  • Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Trains new employees and coworkers on analytical methods, including sample preparation, biological and chemical analyses
  • Prepares daily and monthly reports of plant operating data
  • Maintains general cleanliness of laboratory and equipment
  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations and standard operating procedures
  • Assist with the testing of proficiency samples to ensure Laboratory accreditation
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and County Regulations or Requirements
  • Works around high voltage, rotating equipment and various hazardous chemicals.
  • Performs related work as required
JOB REQUIREMENTS, PREFERENCES & WORK ENVIRONMENT
  1. Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related sciences
  2. Must possess at least one (1) year of experience in laboratory work, preferably in environmental quality control.
  3. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job related field, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for one year of the required experience or education.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The position involves light physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 lbs. of lifting occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of lifting frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
