The biologics characterization group develops state-of-the-art analytical techniques for in-depth characterization of therapeutic proteins and other novel biologic molecules using mass spectrometry and other advanced analytical techniques. We are looking for diverse candidates with strong scientific and leadership experience to join the AbbVie Analytical R&D team and can offer exciting and rewarding career opportunities for these candidates. The ideal candidate will have CMC expertise in analytical development for biologics. The candidate will be responsible for assisting with the development and execution of analytical methods to support CMC and will participate in phase-appropriate characterization of material and products at all stages of development process, as well as monitoring completion of tasks and projects.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads development and implementation of LC-MS based extended characterization methods to support complex biologic programs at various phases. Previous analytical experience with ADCs is preferred.
  • Actively participates in cross-functional teams within Biologics Analytical Research and Development to guide analytical strategy and provide support to process and formulation scientists. Openly share scientific expertise and collaboratively help the team to generate innovative solutions to problems.
  • Advances scientific expertise within function. Proactively advises and shares knowledge and expert opinions with subordinates, peers, and senior management. Mentors and trains colleagues and assesses current and emerging business challenges enabling functional goal achievement.
  • Ensure quality and effectiveness of key results of major project plans through sound design, early risk assessments, and implementation of fallback strategies.
  • Sources and identified emerging scientific trends in the field of molecular characterization of biotherapeutics from internal and external sources and assess relevance. Integrates trends into functional short-term objectives. Advances technology and direction within area of discipline.
  • Applies imagination and innovation by creating, inventing, and implementing new or better approaches, alternatives and breakthrough ideas.
  • Make significant contributions to project team and deliver results in a team-oriented setting and will work across scientific disciplines to drive programs through critical milestones.
  • Generate new scientific proposals and lead those efforts. Anticipate and critically evaluate scientific or regulatory advances or competitive threats and respond with appropriate new strategies.

Qualifications

  • Senior Scientist II: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent education and typically, 12 years of experience, Master's Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, PhD and typically 4 years of experience.
  • Principal Research Scientist I: BS or equivalent education and extensive, Typically, 14+ years of experience; MS or equivalent education with typically 12+ years of experience; PhD with typically 6+ years of experience in area or scientific area of discipline.
  • Deep understanding of protein characterization by mass spectrometry (e.g., peptide mapping, intact mass analysis) and other biophysical techniques (e.g., spectroscopy, structure, and binding).
  • Practical experience and strong knowledge of protein HPLC (e.g., SEC, IEX, HIC), capillary electrophoresis/isoelectric focusing, and other separation techniques as applied to protein analysis.
  • Must possess a solid understanding of protein chemistry and biochemistry, particularly as related to biologics drug development process and formulation. Experiences with the development of antibody drug conjugates (ADCs), and other complex biologic modalities are plus.
  • Proven ability to innovate with a history of new or improved product release.
  • Interacts well with diverse groups and maintains strong working relationship with internal and external collaborators.
