The Environmental Compliance Senior Scientist will assist and coordinate the Environmental Compliance group in multi-media sampling, subsurface investigations, sediment and waste characterization, ESA activities, NEPA, and permitting. They will take an active role in developing and executing technical scopes of work and budgets for proposals and reports. This role involves collaborating with various teams to deliver innovative solutions in environmental sciences, developing a strategic approach to operational efficiency and quality control while working closely with clients, regulatory bodies, and internal departments. The ideal candidate will have a background in environmental or related science, management experience, leadership, client communications and a thorough understanding of environmental laws and regulations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Project Oversight and Operations

  • Produce high-quality documentation that clearly conveys Compliance Service scopes that extend from NPDES permitting, environmental compliance regulations, and technical data.
  • Lead implementation of environmental site assessments, subsurface investigations, environmental permitting, and multi-media sampling projects.
  • Review and interpretation of data and preparation of reports and work plans.
  • Create and review project proposals, scopes of work, and budgets for compliance projects.
  • Lead environmental projects from initiation to completion, ensuring they meet scope, budget, and timeline requirements.
  • Provide support within the department such as standard work, creative communications, and presentation
  • Provide mentorship and training of staff to enhance their skills and knowledge of environmental compliance projects, ensuring timelines, and meeting budgets.
  • Foster a collaborative work environment to enhance productivity and team cohesion.
  • Demonstrate the ability to complete concurrent assignments in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and stay on schedule
  • Oversee scheduling, logistics, and resource allocation for projects.

Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance

  • Review draft documents prepared by staff to ensure compliance with relevant environmental laws, regulations, and industry standards including, but not limited to NPDES, NEPA, RCRA, CWA, Phase I & II ESA, etc.
  • Ensure that company health, safety, and environmental standards are consistently adhered to throughout all phases of project work.
  • Develop and implement quality control protocols to maintain a high standard of services.
  • Ensure that operational procedures reflect current environmental laws and regulations.
  • Oversee the quality assurance and quality control processes for scientific data and reports.

Technical Expertise and Leadership

  • Execute and oversee editing and release of technical materials.
  • Ensure that the scope of service and request for proposal documents include comprehensive costing, clear outlines of work to be performed, and appropriate technical data where necessary.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, project managers, and technical staff, to ensure project deliverables are met.

Data Analysis and Reporting

  • Oversee the collection and analysis of environmental data, using appropriate methodologies and tools.
  • Prepare comprehensive scientific reports, including data interpretation, conclusions, and recommendations for clients and stakeholders.
  • Present research findings to clients, stakeholders, and at scientific conferences or workshops.

Client and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Business development and generation of new business.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients, understanding their needs and ensuring their satisfaction with project outcomes.
  • Collaborate with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and other stakeholders to advance environmental projects and conservation efforts.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: B.S. in Geology, Engineering, Environmental Science
  • Experience: 10+ years of professional experience in geology, engineering, or the environmental sciences, with a track record of leading successful projects.
  • Proven knowledge of environmental laws, regulations, CWA, RCRA, and experience preparing documents required for Phase I & II ESA, NEPA, and DOT Environmental Assessments.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Professional Engineer or Professional Geologist
  • Experience with multimedia sampling including surface water, groundwater, sediment, soil sampling, stormwater.
  • Expertise working with or within environmental regulatory agencies.
  • Proven experience in writing and securing research grants.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in managing and mentoring teams.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software.

Experience:

  • Experience with multimedia sampling including surface water, groundwater, sediment, soil sampling, stormwater.
  • Successfully managed and completed projects to meet clients needs
  • Experienced in leading and mentoring teams to achieve project objectives.

Desired Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess complex environmental issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to develop innovative approaches and methodologies in environmental projects.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements and emerging environmental challenges.
  • Strong business development background
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in report writing and presenting complex scientific data.
  • Comfortable on and driving a boat a plus.

Work Environment

We enjoy and appreciate collaboration as a team and expect great communication from the candidate. Teamwork is anticipated through one on ones with staff but will also need to occur through many phone and text/email conversions. Work will consist of office time to collaborate with other managers and staff.

This candidate is expected to come into the Stow office daily to assist staff and project workload. Remote and work from home will occur as needed and with pre-approval from their manager. Standard office equipment and office space will be provided. For any allowable remote work. Uninterrupted home-based internet is a must in your home to attend and host video calls, along with a minimum bandwidth speed of 20 mbps.

Physical Requirements:

  • Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 lbs.
  • Communication with others to exchange information.
  • Working outdoors in all kinds of weather as necessary for project(s).
  • Walking for periods of time including maneuvering uneven, uphill, and downhill terrain, project specific.

Travel Requirements: Candidate should have the ability to periodically assist with field assignments as needed. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary on a project-specific basis.
