Description

Assist in the development of new paint and coating formulations, including water-based, solvent-based, UV-curable, and specialty systems.

Weigh, mix, grind, and prepare lab-scale batches following detailed formulation sheets or experimental guidelines.

Conduct performance testing on new formulations (e.g., scratch, abrasion, burnish, gloss, opacity, scrub resistance, stain resistance, color measurements, etc.).

Record detailed observations, measurements, and results in lab notebooks and electronic databases.

Operate and maintain R&D lab equipment such as dispersers, mixers, drawdown applicators, ovens, and analytical instruments.

Collaborate with R&D Chemists to troubleshoot formulations and optimize material performance.

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment aligned with company and safety protocols.

Participate in raw material evaluations and supplier sample testing.

Support scale-up from lab to pilot plant or production, including experimental batch trials.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or a related technical field.

1-3 years of laboratory experience, preferably in paints, coatings, adhesives, or polymer materials.

Strong hands-on skills in handling chemicals, preparing batches, and conducting lab testing.

Working knowledge of paint/coating raw materials: binders, pigments, solvents, additives, etc.

Familiarity with coating application techniques (e.g., spray, brush, roller, drawdown).

Attention to detail and a commitment to accurate documentation.

Strong organizational and time management skills.

Proficient in MS Excel, Word; experience with lab data management software is a plus but not required.

Excellent teamwork and communication skills to collaborate with colleagues.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
