The Environmental Chemistry Laboratory (ECL) of the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is a nationally recognized leader in Analytical and Environmental Chemistry whose mission is to protect public health and the environment from adverse effects of chemicals. As a Research Scientist Supervisor II you will have the opportunity to:

  • The Berkeley Analytical Branch Chief will serve a major role in ECL as the leader of an interdisciplinary group of scientists and supporting staff to provide state-of-the art scientific and technical leadership in support of DTSC's core programs, mission, vision, and Strategic Plan
  • The incumbent will manage the ECL-Berkeley Analytical Branch in an ISO 17025 quality system environment, identify and anticipate the needs of DTSC's core programs and Executive Management Team, and develop and track performance goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) for advancement of the Branch's programs
  • Advise the ECL Chief on strategic issues and provides strategic leadership to the Branch
  • Manage and direct complex and difficult research studies on issues of national and International interest
  • Oversee the development and implementation of state-of-the-art approaches for the identification, measurement, and monitoring of chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) and chemicals in new matrices to inform DTSC leadership of unaddressed issues and protect the public and environment
  • Recruit highly qualified staff and facilitate integration of expertise within ECL for the research programs

Desirable Qualifications We Look For:

  • 8 years or more of research and development experience
  • 5 years or more of experience with mass spectrometry and other analytical chemistry techniques and instrumentation
  • 5 years or more of experience supervising and overseeing the work of lower-level staff
  • 3 years or more experience with managing a laboratory or section/unit of a laboratory
  • 1 year or more of experience working under ISO/IEC 17025 Quality Management System
  • 1 year of experience working in a laboratory with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
