GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) is currently seeking an Assistant Project Manager who has experience with both field work and project management tasks for natural resources services to join our Ecology Practice in our Norwood, MA office. The qualified individual must be able to effectively coordinate and lead field work, support other technical staff, complete permitting tasks, interact in the field with clients, stakeholders and contractors, and some experience with budget development, drafting proposals, and project reports. Prior experience with utility, transportation, and renewable energy projects is highly desirable as is comprehensive knowledge of the following environmental permit programs: Federal - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sections 404/10/401, NEPA/MEPA; and MA, RI, NH and/or ME wetlands and natural resource permitting programs. Experience with similar permitting programs in other regions is desirable but not required. Education and/or certification in soils, wetlands, marine ecology, ecological restoration, stormwater/erosion control, and/or wildlife is highly desirable.

This position will be part of an interdisciplinary team working on a wide variety of interesting projects including but not limited to: energy projects, ecological restoration, lake/pond/dam improvements, living shoreline design, solar development, utility corridor upgrades, waterfront infrastructure, and general site development work primarily in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, but may also include work in New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut, and New York.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities in assisting with technical execution of projects under the supervision of project managers:

  • Manage field/biological surveys and perform routine and specialty field tasks including wetland delineation and evaluation, botanical surveys, soils investigations, wildlife and aquatic habitat evaluations, faunal surveys, site reconnaissance and explorations, ecological constraints assessment, GPS surveying, and erosion and sediment control monitoring
  • Manage environmental compliance monitoring, and perform field inspections on an as-needed basis
  • Prepare reports and recommendations based upon field studies
  • Conduct desktop analyses and prepare environmental impact reports
  • Prepare GIS maps and environmental constraints mapping
  • Develop environmental permit applications and licensing
  • Manage assigned tasks as part of larger projects

Special Skills/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Soil Science/Biology/Wetlands/Ecology/Geography or related discipline required; Master’s degree preferred
  • 3-5+ years of experience in wetland delineation, natural resource evaluation, GPS data collection and ecological permitting. Experience with processing of GPS field data and preparation of GIS mapping exhibits is preferred
  • Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel locally and regionally for this position.
  • Must be able to walk 8-10 miles / day over variable terrain in all weather conditions carrying 30-pounds.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to prepare accurate, clear and concise letters, memoranda, technical reports, proposals, and figures
  • Must be willing to learn and improve regulatory knowledge
  • Able to work independently and within a team or group atmosphere
  • Strong time management, coordination, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong academic record
  • Environmental science experience and strong ecological/environmental analytical skills are required
  • Experience with environmental compliance oversight is a plus
  • Experience with erosion and sedimentation control application is a plus
  • OSHA 10-hour construction safety training is a plus but can be provided
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPR is a plus but not required
