SUMMARY: Seeking a highly skilled and motivated synthetic chemist to join our small molecule drug discovery team. The ideal candidate will be an exceptional chemist who operates independently in the lab, designs synthetic routes, and successfully prepares novel compounds that drive projects forward while building strong working relationships with colleagues throughout the organization.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Independently plans, optimizes, and executes syntheses of small molecules in accordance with project needs.
Contributes creative solutions to synthetic problems, demonstrating independent thinking.
Purifies, analyzes, and registers small molecules in the internal compound registration system.
Presents progress in chemistry meetings and project teams meetings.
As part of the lab chemistry team, is responsible for one or more group roles related to equipment, compound registration, compound inventory, lab safety and/or lab supplies.
Demonstrates and fosters teamwork within Chemistry and with other cross-functional colleagues.
Maintains lab notebooks in accordance with company policy and practice.
Maintains familiarity with current scientific literature relevant to the research experiments or program.
Complies with safe laboratory practices and EH&S guidelines.
Contributes to the writing of technical documents, patents, scientific manuscripts, etc.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Education:
Masters degree in a related discipline and a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or,
Bachelors degree in a related discipline and a minimum of 5 years of related experience; or,
Equivalent combination of education and industry medicinal chemistry experience.
Experience:
Demonstrated independent thought and creativity leading to a solution of synthetic chemistry problems.
Extensive experience in the design and execution of multi-step organic syntheses.
Experience collaborating with colleagues in chemistry and related disciplines.
Experience with modern methods of compound isolation, purification, and characterization.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Ability to deliver high-quality work under tight timelines
Excellent problem-solving and SAR analysis skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Good people skills, flexibility, and ability to work well in a team environment
Proficient in the use of modern analytical and purification approaches
Skilled in the effective use of scientific literature and chemical/scientific databases
Strong synthetic organic bench skills

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across severalU.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets. The base pay range for this positionis $100,000 - $141,500 annually. The base pay range may take into account the candidates geographic region, which will adjust the pay depending on the specific work location. The base pay offered will take into account the candidates geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, experience and internal equity, among other factors.In addition to the base salary, as part of our Total Rewards program, Exelixis offers comprehensive employee benefits package, including a 401k plan with generous company contributions, group medical, dental and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, and flexible spending accounts. Employees are also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus program, or if field sales staff, a sales-based incentive plan.
